Best way to connect a HTPC to HDTV?

617 Views 15 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  aprather
What's everyone's recommendation for physically connecting a HTPC to a HDTV? Both audio and video, I've got component input and a dvi input (I think) on the back of my WS-55313 HDTV, as well as composite. How should I go about hooking the thing up?

It is debatable about what is the best way. It depends on your computer, your operating system, and whether you can live with some of the drawbacks of DVI/HDMI. However, the easiest way to hook up a computer to an HDTV is not debatable. Here it is.

ATI DVI to component adapter at 1080i or 720p with no overscan, black crush, or flicker. And here is how to set it up.

Um... sure it's debatable.
No debates... I want to see an all out brawl!!! :D

I'm still buying parts for my HTPC, and don't yet have a video card--still on the fence WRT ATI or nVidia........ just haven't seen a clear cut thread on any forum to help me go one way or the other, although I guess I'm leaning a bit more towards the nVidia solution......

Maybe I should order my CPU and MB first.....

My RPTV is just analog input (although I do have a true vga input, but that one isn't calibrated like the others...)

I just hooked up my htpc to my plasma via VGA cable. That seems like the easiest way to me.
There have been tons of debate threads here Marc. Certainly if you search my posts in this forum, you can find my own opinios on the matter based on personal tests ;)
Damn, you're quick with replies.........:)

I know, you and mpgxsvcd are some of my favorite reading...
It doesn't even need to be the easiest way, I'm more interested in the best image quality.

Yea I posted that just to get a reaction. Everything is debatable! Can you do 1080i or true 720p over VGA? I thought most VGA inputs are very limited and that they don’t give you the true widescreen HD resolutions on most TVs.
No idea over VGA, but you certainly can over DVI ;). And DVI-D, when calibrated in conjunction with yur display, is a better picture than analog (which is what the DVI-Component is).

Now that I can debate! Just because DVI is digital does not mean it is better. If there is no interference then analog can carry the exact same image that digital can and it does! I am planning on taking some screen shots with both and doing a comparison. When I tried this the other day I could not tell the difference at all. Have you tried both?
Absolutely have. I will clarify a bit, I got sloppy on my statement. For a fixed panel display, DVI-D is superior because it gives a true 1:1 pixel mapping.
I do VGA to my Zenith CRT HDTV, and can do 1080i, or 480p (TV doesn't support 720p). With powerstrip, and can get all sorts of different resolutions:

640x480

800x600i

1024x768i

1280x960i

1440x1080i

1920x1080i

etc...

Also, even if you can't "calibrate" the VGA input from your TV, you can usually do color calibrations and such on your video card.

I output to my tv from my pc at 1024x768 (native res of my plasma). Whats wrong with just doing this?
Um, probably because the TV in question isn't a plasma.

Im not talking about his tv, im talking about mine. Im asking if this is a problem to do what im doing and if im missing out on quality or doing something wrong by choosing this resolution
