Best way to test HDM-DVI colorspace problems?

719 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  LarryChanin
I am reading about the issues with the DVI-HDMI black levels. I have an older Hitachi PJ-TX100 720p front projector with a DVI in. I have switched between the DVI in and component in and notice a slight diffference in black levels with the HD-A2 (v1.6 firmware).

What is the best way to test if I am getting the correct black levels? I have the standard dvd version of Digital DVD Essentials. Can I use that? Just use a simple plunge pattern?

Also, I have a setting in the projector's menu for the DVI that allows me to switch from "DVD" to "Computer." The "Computer" setting seems to brighten the image a bit. I kind of assume this may be a way to correct the black levels?

Thanks for your help,

Scott

Hi Scott,

Hopefully some of the more experience forum members will also chime in.

I believe a standard DVD pluge pattern will be useful, although an HD DVD pluge pattern would probably be better. In addition to pluge for setting brightness you will need an other test pattern to correctly set contrast.

Here's a thread in which I discuss the ramp pattern in the DVE High Definition HD DVD calibration disc.

Does Your A2/xa2 Fail below Black Over Hdmi?

With regard to your projector's "Computer" setting, my guess is that if it results in the calibration settings of your HDMI to DVI connection matching the calibration settings of the component video connection, without adversely effecting color accuracy, then it may represent a solution. Others, including myself, have reported greenish colors when using similar display controls.

Good luck.

Larry
