big screen needed for big sub?

426 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  cecaa850
I currently have an old Sony 27" Trinitron CRT. I'm planning on upgrading my TV last as plasmas/LCD's etc. depreciate like crazy, and I'm fairly happy with what I have at the moment. I could definitely wait a little to save a lot on an awesome big screen.

My question is, if I only have this dinky little 27 incher, would a sub like the Mirage S12 or PB10-ISD really be necessary for movies, or would the bass totally overkill the picture if you know what I mean? Should I wait to get a big-screen before I invest in a sub for movies? I know it's all subjective, but what would you guys do? Would you want (or need) butt-kicking bass when watching a movie on a 27" screen? haha :)

??? The two are not related at all. I am using a 27" tv as well with my 7' tall sonosub and it doesn't seem "unbalanced" if that is what you are getting at. My preference is audio, so I will upgrade all my audio equipment before I get that 56" HD-ILA I have my eye on :D

Yes.
I'm not sure they're really coming down that fast. They did for awhile, but they've seemed to level off a bit.

You might also consider a projector for movies, if you really want to do your HT in style :) They have already come down quite a bit. You can get a nice one for much cheaper then a plasma screen (which aren't that good imo anyway, brighter doesn't always mean better).

If you want to wait on the tv, it's no big deal IMO. I still enjoyed buttkicking sound with my old 35" tv.

Here's another screwy idea (I'm full of them!). Move 50% closer to your tv. Wow, it just got 50% bigger!
The only time I felt unbalanced was watching a movie on a 5" black and white screen :D

That is not to be done ever again.
My wife and daughter used to go out to the movies 2-3 times a month. After setting up a 5.1 sound system with a VTF 2 they no longer go out to movies since they like the sound much better at home. We still have a 32 inch Toshiba SD but the sound has made Movie watching at home much more immersive and enjoyable.(Plus saving me a lot of money for movie going)

Upgrade the sound system and you are going to enjoy that TV so much better. The sound is a huge part of the enjoyment and the sub is the best part of the sound. You will catch yourself with a big grin on your face when that sub kicks in.

It will make waiting for the HDTVs to drop their prices that much easier.

If it was color you could rig some kind of bungee cord to attach it directly to your face (your ears perhaps?). It would be like imax! :p

I wonder if the subwoofer would cause that contraption to swing wildly :p

HOLY JEEZ!! Just took a look at your sig. i guess if you don't see an imbalance with that 7 foot behemoth, I won't see one either hahaha
Good sound is good sound.

But it was interesting how much bigger the sound seemed when I went from a 30" to a 61" TV.
Now that my screen is 7' wide, it can finally keep up with the bass. ;)
My TV is my next upgrade. I currently suffer from big screen envy. I think my audio will be O.K. for a while. (Him likes the SONY my precious). I'm currently looking at a couple different models (feel the BIG screen, oooh so smooth) but haven't made up my mind yet. (Him MUST upgrade soon). Maybe something later this year. Carl
