Black in-wall and in-ceiling speaker covers

2329 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  chucky08016
Hi, all.

I am putting four Atmos speakers into my ceiling and my L/C/R channels into the wall behind my retractable AT screen. Right now, all the covers are white, but we are remodeling the room and want to make them all black. My installer is suggesting painting them with a diluted paint, but I'd rather not do that.

Can anyone recommend a product for covering in-wall and in-ceiling speakers with a black fabric cover or some other suitable material? Sound quality is the priority, but slightly raised boxes with a stretched black acoustic fabric or other appropriate material would be fine, if someone sells such a thing.

All input and bright ideas welcome. Thanks!

Krylon Fusion matte black is what I used to spray mine. Would definitely spray them rather than trying to roll or brush. You just need to mask off over the drivers. Most new speakers come with a piece of paper for masking off the drivers so you can easily spray paint the bezel to suit. On the grilles, do very light coats from different directions - you just want to change the color and not clog the holes.

Ceiling is SW Emerald interior flat Tricorn Black. Kinda difficult to photograph black stuff.

One more with the LEDs on.

slow and steady several light coats, don't try for 100% coverage on the first few passes. Keep a can of compressed air handy for emergency fixes of too much paint clogging the holes.

James did you roll or spray your ceiling?

I rolled the ceiling, bottom of the soffit, and the speaker columns. The crown moulding and the existing trim around the attic door were brushed & back-brushed.

The Rustoleum (not Krylon as I originally wrote) matte black is a good match to Rosco SuperSat. I also sprayed the speaker covers, but the exposed trim on the speakers I just painted with an artists brush dipped into the Rosco I painted the ceiling with.

Dave Vaughn recommended this to me in this post: Rustoleum 2X Ultra Cover Flat Black. Link is to Home Depot (copied from Dave's post) but I bought at Lowes.

I'm actually in the middle of a new theater build in our new home and just finished installing 4 new height speakers. I just grabbed a can of krylon black and sprayed them just like others have suggested. Multiple thin coats will do the trick.

Spraying will have zero impact on sound but will look great. Just make sure to cover whatever shouldn't be painted and give it a go.
