NAB 2014 just got a lot more exciting!
BMD just announced the world's first user upgradable sensor/mount Super 35mm 4k Digital Film Camera with dual recorders, two extra touch screens, 10.1" 1920x1200 built-in viewfinder, DaVinci Resolve 11 and much more for only $5,995. Plus, they also just announced the world's smallest 4k Studio camera with the world's largest viewfinder....a 10" viewfinder. for $2,995. BTW, the 4k Super 35mm also shoots 1080p 60p RAW & ProRes.

Those cameras are huge, you are not going to be doing anything with them outside of a hefty tripod.

I like how they show the studio camera with the lens equipped with a grip - as though you could use it shoulder mounted with that giant screen on the back, lol.

Yeah, a bit large but a 10" screen! Freakin' cool! It's not much heavier than an Alexa though. Will be fine for steadicam rigs, which is exactly what cinema cinema cameras should be equipped with for those silky smooth hand held shots. The weight alone helps keep micro jitters at bay. Global shutter kills any rolling shutter too, so win-win, except for your arms, but they'll get a good work out at least.

No DCI cinema 4096 4K ? Why ?

Not sure why, except maybe they're using the same sensor as in the Production Camera. Either way, for me that's a minor flaw and just about everything listed looks absolutely BRILLIANT! They listened and included so much it's mind blowing:

Super 35mm: Check!

4k: Check!

Global Shutter: Check!

10.1" flip out LCD monitor: HOLY FRACK! Check!

Built-in Waveform monitor & scopes for accurate exposure : Check!

Very high bitrate compressed and RAW recording of both 4k and 1080p upto 60fps: Check!

World's First User Upgradable Mount & Sensor for when that 4k or 6k sensor with 16 stops of DR is available: Check!

Dual 5" touch screens and dual recording; Check!

Professional XLR Audio inputs: Check!

Audio monitors: Check!

Remote control iris is focus: Check!

Meta Data: Check!

New DaVinci Resolve 11 Full Version: Check!

12G-SDI: Check!

The biggest negative I've seen thus far though is the price of the recording media. C2Fast 2.0 media is cringeworthy expensive.

If I get one I'd be coming from the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera and canceling my GH4 Pre-Order. I may wait on it though until a new sensor is available. Although, it's nice that 4k 60p RAW as well as ProRes is an option.

So you are going from the BM Pocket Cinema Camera to this 16.5lb camera ? Really ? My back hurts just thinking about it. I will keep my GH4 pre-order with cinema 4096 4K that shoots on low cost SDXC cards and is 15 lbs lighter.

Undecided. Although, it would greatly diminish mico-jitter rolling shutter jello from my handheld shots. lol. For now I think not, but if an amazing 4K or 6K sensor with 16 stops of dynamic range & high frame rates comes along like the Kinemax 6k that I can upgrade to then I will consider it. It's just a very very unique camera.

Here's a video of Simon from BlackMagic Design talking about the new cameras. At the end of the video, I included clips of the BlackMagic booth. As you can see, it was a decent sized booth.

Here's the video resolutions and frame rates:

One of my best features is the ability to shoot in 2160 / 60p with the combination of a Global chip so the motion quality will look extremely incredible. On the other hand, the low light capabilities might not be much better than the original Black Magic 4K camera for $3,000. People have praised that camera for it's video quality when theirs plenty of lighting but on the other hand, the low light abilities have gotten some negative responses. Every camera has it's strong points and weaknesses. You just gotta figure out what's the most important features for what you need to do.

I hope this means a price cut on the URSA with the "old" sensor!

P.S. Thanks for digging up last year's thread instead of starting a new one, Paulo :)

I'm glad to see it. Blackmagic knows their market. Resolve is the most powerful grading software and they make a lite version of it available free. To me the bigger problem is lining up to wait for their cameras, that by the time they are available in quantities are no longer attractive. On the other hand, I'm circumspect that you can depend on the latest sensor technology to just always be retrofittable.
