Blackout material
Quick question for DIYer's. I found the blackout material at Calico Corners in the Bay Area. Problem is they said that it came it white and off white. They guy showed me the WHITE but it looked off whitish (brownish tinge to it). Problem is they didn't have the other color to compare. Home depot doesn't have any so I'm stuck with these guys.
IS the material supposed to not look "pure" white? Also is pure white or off white better for CRT's (8inchers).

I had to vist JoAnn Fabrics and Hancock Fabrics several times before I found the right bolt of fabric that looked the most white to me. Several samples looked like they had a blueish tint to them. Just vist the all the fabric stores you can, and make note of what kind of lighting you are viewing it under.

I'm in the bay area and I used the fabric from Calico Corners. However, I used Jo Ann's blackout fabric for control of ambient light and my experience with each seems to indicate the stuff at Jo Ann's is "the" stuff to use. It's more durable, creases come out sooner, It's just better. By the way, when I bought my fabric I tried to roll it up but it still got creases (fold lines) in it so I suggest you take a mailing tube or something you can roll the fabric up with. This may not be as much of a problem with the stuff from Jo Anns though.

p.s There's plenty of Jo Ann's in the bay area so you're not stuck with Calico Corners. If you don't have a car though and need a lift to Jo Ann's then let me know.

Joanne's "blackout" fabric. SKU 2117232 @ $5.99/yd. in San Diego.
I bought some blackout too but has a few wrinkles. Can I iron this out on low heat settings on a cloth side? Will the vinyl melt on the otherside? Can I use steam? I know stretching will help but I'd like to iron the piece before stretching on frame if possible. Thanks for any reply. I got mine from my local, small-town fabric store: Fabric and Drapery Mart (937) 584-2771 (9A to 4P Eastern Time). I bought it for $4.50 a yard on a 54" wide bolt. I bought 3 yards for an 8 foot wide screen (16:9 ration will be 96"X54"). It's bright white on cloth side and less white on the vinyl side. It's is comparable to my 1.1 gain Bretford manual pull-down screen (70"X70"). A bright 6V flashlight can't shine through on otherside (therefore called blackout).

I just stretched mine over a 45x80x1/4" board(pegboard material without the holes) and stapled it to the back. I was able to stretch all of the wrinkles out and mine had sat folded overnight. I ended up putting the vinyl side out and it seems to be working very well. Mine was pure white on both sides. I then covered 2x2"s with velvet for the boarder. Good luck.
