Im not sure if this is already on here, I did a search and nothing came up. Im using this on my HTPC to make the HDD LED blink while the TV tuner is recording. You can hook up the Hard Drive led to an onboard COM port, or to an external COM port with some modification and set it to blink or light up when media center is recording a TV show.

A serial port is able to drive 7 to 10mA, this is just enough for a generic LED. Using extra bright LEDs is not reccomended; they require more power and will not be able to reach full brightness.

Serial port direct connect (without soldering!)

For all of you without soldering skills I recently developed an option to connect the harddisk or power LED directly to an internal COM port header. There is no special hardware required. Check this thread for the details.
