Watching Gravity last night and towards the end I began to hear an awful metallic sound. For a bit I thought it was the sound of the ship breaking apart in the movie but it sounded too strange. Stopped movie. Now when listening to anything the speaker has a terrible rattle. Took woofer out of the box and upon removal there is a loose metal piece in the back housing. Barely visible through a small hole in the back housing. Appears to be a metal ring from what I can see..best attempt at taking a picture included. What did I break?

I can't get the pictures to load for some reason but if you need a replacement woofer check with hsu to see if something like this may work.

Yea idk why I'm having issues with the pics. They show in there but when clicked on an error saying "This image could not be loaded". But there is a hyperlink on the "this image" part that seems to make the photo load. Least for me. I have contacted HSU and they want me to send the woofer back. It's only 6 months old and under warranty. Just trying to get a quick suggestion as to what the piece is and what caused it. Im assuming the woofer was pushed too hard. Strange as I felt it wasnt being pushed super hard then again my bass was sometimes boomy and unclean.

Got the pic over to HSU and they were quick in getting back to me. Looks as if a shorting ring came loose. Still awaiting the reply as to what would cause it.

Probably a manufacturing defect. It happens. Since it's still under warranty, just go through the process and get the driver replaced. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again. Maybe you need to supplement your HSU with another one to get more output. (And so it starts)

I would take this as a sign that a new sub crawl was in order. Start over with the new sub driver, as if you never had a sub. Turn all the modes off, re-integrate the sub via it's best position (which may or may not be where it was), then re-run Audyssey (or whatever app you use).

And actually my plan was to go with a second HSU sub but now I'm wondering. I only had this thing for 6 months so the total usage in that time frame has been maybe 50 hours. Half of which were an Xbox game that didn't really use much low frequencies. Only really pushed the sub a few times with a handful of movies (Overlord, Inception being the big ones). Wondering if these maybe aren't enough for my wants. I suppose with two I would gain enough to get what I want possibly.

I think it's unlikely that you damaged it with your usage, HSU been around a long time, and I'm sure they've designed it to protect it from most abuse. Outside of pure sine waves, it's unlikely you can do anything to damage in normal use. I had some bottom line SVS subs, beat the living stuffing out of them, and never a problem, and I'm sure HSU protects theirs just as well.

Their explanation was that the glue came loose due to heat most likely from playing it at loud levels. At least its under warranty.

Also wanted to ask about this. Sorry for the fingerprints all over it. This is the front of the cone. It looks somewhat like cracks but they aren't actually cracked through. More like dents/spidering. Is this normal or does it result from the woofer pushing too much?

Good news is HSU got the new driver sent out to me and I got in back in the box and everything is working. Just trying to avoid a repeat haha

It's called a dust cap.

I have no idea whether such cracking could occur, even if the sub was pushed to its limits or beyond on a regular basis.

Makes me wonder whether the driver was in good shape when the speaker was assembled. I'm a happy user of Hsu products, but I have the impression that QC at their Chinese assembly plant isn't perfect. (That may be the price to pay for, well, relatively low-priced units.)

Holy crap, how did you manage to damage/crack the dust cap? That shouldn't result from normal wear and tear...

Idk. I keep the cover on the sub at all times so it wasn't anything external that caused it. Again it doesnt appear to be cracked through, rather just dented, warped.

I don't believe I over pushed the sub really but I guess it is a possibility. I mean I had some moments where the bass was pretty incredible and explosive, but that's kind of what I thought this sub was for. I never heard any sounds of bottoming out or anything like that. Sometimes the sound did get a little muddy. And like I said, while some movies have pushed the sub, I haven't really clocked in many hours on the thing.

Could the shorting ring have been flopping back and forth in there, hitting the dust cap from the inside?

I don't think so. Where the shorting ring is located, its not possible for it to move forward any...least I would believe so. It's hard to really say cause I leave the cover on so its unknown how long it's been like this

Maybe send the photo to HSU plus another but with a wider angle to show the whole woofer assembly.

Yea Im trying to send it them as theyve been very helpful. Sadly they or I have some sort of data limit in the emails and Im having trouble getting the file size small enough.

I just decided to do the AccuEQ with my OnKyo receiver. Interesting as it set my sub to +3db with my gain on the sub turned at about 2 o'clock. Ridiculous when I see others putting the gain to 10 o'clock and their receiver dropping it to -15db lol. Just want to say it's interesting as I always ran it around 0db for light stuff to even -6db or more for the more punchy stuff with the gain set lower than 2 o'clock.
