Blu-Ray. Right Now, or Soon?

1218 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  eskimo2176
I almost pulled the trigger on a Panasonic DMP-BD30 last week but am wondering if any breakthroughs resulting from the CES offerings are worth getting instead, or if waiting a couple of months for availability of soemthing not currently out makes sense. I fully understand that waiting for the next best thing can result in total paralysis, and I AM looking to buy something in the near term. I just don't want to buy something that is totally outclassed in 4-6 months.

I seek high-quality Blu-Ray AND upconversion of DVD's that meets or exceeds my Zenith DVB318. Thanks

2 years later and still a happy camper... Right now!

OR many will tell you to wait for various upcoming features related to disc extras, downloads and marketing stuff... But if you are mostly for 1080P movies and lossless sound and could care less about the extras, I'd pick one up today.

Please note the BD 30 has an inherent audio issue on the LFE which will affect many Blu Ray disc tracks. May or may not be an issue for you. Check out the threads on the Panasonic. I would have gone for this model, but for the audio issue which doesn't cut it for "lossless sound".
You run your DVB318 a 1080i via the component connection? I still own one, but it's not in the rack anymore. That one feature has me keeping it around.

I think the PS3 beats it by a little. It (the DVB318) slays my Samsung BD-P1000 though.
Blu-ray live features are due out this year and currently there are not any players capable of playing these features and/or has this new functionality been tested yet.

Unless you are willing to upgrade in the near future if your current player is found to be not compatible or this is not a concern for you I would suggest waiting.

my opinion is if your not getting a ps3 id wait for the panny BD 50. thats the one im looking forward to. what it really comes down to is if you want it now with less features like bland or if you want more features and want to wait for it. It also depends on what your other equipment supports what your needs and wants are.

+1..........wait for the Panasonic BD 50. The BD 30 is a very nice player, but I would still opt for the Sony PS3 over it.

Yeah, and its a bummer. However, judging by Panasonic's incredible support for the BD10, I wouldn't be the least surprised to see them fix this in a firmware update sooner rather than later.

They are definitely the CE manufacturer that makes the best consumer grade SALs.

I am currently using a PS3 for playback and would have loved to move to the Panny unit, however, I think I am going to wait until the next line of SALs hit the market.

The PS3 is great, I just want to be able to utilize my receiver via HDMI 1.3a.
