With HD-DVD I enjoyed the best of both worlds. Excellent hd-dvd and superior standard DVD audio and video. Now with years since Blu-Ray has become the standard I'm finally going to purchase a high quality BR player.

My question is this - "Is there a particular brand that while being an outstanding Blu-Ray in itself also provides excellent standard DVD audio and video playback?"

I ask since I have quite a large collection of standard format DVD's.

I don't think there is a particular brand, no. If I had to pick one "brand" it would be Oppo, as the BDP-83 was quite good and the BDP-80 is OK (definitely a notch or two below the 83 though - I've had both). Their new 93 is also quite good at upscaling, but is still in beta and Oppo has some more tweaking to do before it's finished and released to the general public.

Aside from Oppos, I would recommend checking out Winston's rankings. He posts both the results of synthetic tests as well as subjective rankings of several players.

+1 on the oppo. I have the BDP-83, which will soon be replaced by the 3D-capable BDP-93 for the same price. I was an early adopter of both HD-DVD and BD, and actually preferred HD-DVD. I still have 3 Toshiba XA2's and 2 A35's, one of each in use and the rest in the closet (along with about 200 HD-DVD's), and the Oppo comes very close to the XA2 on SD upconversion (I think the Toshiba still does a little better, but for most material it's not extremely noticeable).

Regardless, the Oppo plays the current HD disc "winner", upconverts SD discs very well, loads quickly, and also plays SACD's and DVD-Audio. In other words, it pretty much does it all, and does it all very well.
