Go to JUST THE PATTERNS and then there is written descriptions of "what to do" to get things done with each pattern on the screen.

You might want to dload AVS709 from this site as well and read through it's documentation as well. They both end up with the same results and I find there are a few tricks up the AVS709's sleeves that the DVE HD misses.
