Bluray rips with PCM audio, frustrated

Hey all,

I have had my Bluray collection ripped to .ts and .mkv files for years now to stream throughout my house using Mede8er clients. Only recently did I notice that for some odd reason a few of the rips I did back in 2012 have lossy Dolby Digital soundtracks instead of their PCM streams (most notably the first three Pirates of the Caribbean's). It might have been I tried make PCM work as I am now and gave up at that time.

Either way, I re-ripped these movies and discovered that I cannot simply make an .mkv file with PCM audio. I tried a .ts file but two of the movies had no audio.

Googling it seems the remedy is to convert the PCM tracks to FLAC using eac3to. However, when I do this the file size goes from 5GB to 1GB and the bit depth goes from 4600kb/s to 1600kb/s.

Is there something I am missing or a different program I should try?

Thanks!

eac3to can definitely extract lpcm correctly. I don't think there is an issue with mkv storing and playing lpcm, I just think MakeMKV doesn't do it correctly. You can try Blu-Ray Ripper, it uses eac3to to extract and can output m2ts and mkv. I have no issues with lpcm.

So normally I use clownBD (which uses eac3to) to extract the audio and video files from the Bluray than remux with either tsMuxer or MKVMuxer. If I use MKVMuxer to remux the video and lpcm audio, it doesn't playback correctly on my client device (notably the surround speakers are off/missing audio). I can remux with tsMuxer, but for some reason some of the movies don't playback correctly while others do.

Tried MakeMKV and that's when I started Googling what the issue is. Was recommended to just change the lpcm to flac but hence where I am hung up now.
I ripped 1500 movies with MakeMKV and this is the first time I've read it doesn't do LPCM correctly.

Are you sure this is a thing?

I can believe a program called clown doesn't work but I can't believe I never noticed MakeMKV wasn't doing this correctly.

clownBD doesn't remux, just extracts the audio and video (basically a GUI for eac3to) so that isn't the issue.

And yea, tried all of the movies I want to get LPCM for with MakeMKV and none of them play audio. Searching "MakeMKV LPCM" brings up some forum topics on the official website recommending the PCM to Flac conversion.
I'll probably just rip straight to ISO, save myself the hassle
Hello Again,

I was intrigued so after finishing what I was watching (Undone Ep2), I opened infuse and selected PotC Curse of the Black Pearl... It indicated it had 5.1 PCM and my AVR also indicate it was getting PCM (Not really a surprise as ATV4K outputs everything as PCM.)

I have been sort of out of the game of ripping stuff ... It used to take all my time. I have 4 NAS units with 4x4TB and used to rip all my Blus. These days I prefer cloud/streaming copies and I even delete my rips when I get something in iTunes for example.

So ... I felt like I got "lucky" from the start because I bought MakeMKV and it seemed to do just about everything right. Other programs like DVDFab seemed inferior and I never tried Clown or saw a reason why anyone would. With early titles like PoTC CotBP it was a bit of a trick to notice which stream was PCM because if I remember correctly the DD was lossy.

Anyways,... Like I said.. I never, ever, heard of MakeMKV not doing PCM correctly.

Some people like to convert to FLAC to save space. I never did that. So, maybe forget what the other forums say for a moment and give MakeMKV another try?... I don't know why you would be getting no audio... but then I don't know how you are playing these resultant files back.

I'm willing to help more (this is interesting)

So,... following your advice to search for MakeMKV LPCM I found this...

Seems to have a quick and easy solution. Also maybe the playback things I have been using just never had a problem with this which is why I was never aware of it. I used to use JRiver for playing everything... These days I have stuff in Plex to manage and play it back with Infuse from an ATV4K.

Will give that a try (not sure how I missed that thread). Report back soon. Thanks!
When dealing with lpcm with eac3to, its a 2 step process. Extract the raw lpcm then add the extended wav header. Blu-Ray Ripper does this automatically and is a better solution then ClownBD. ClownBD is more than just a demuxer, but its way outdated and best replaced by Blu-Ray Ripper if you are looking to get the same functions. MakeMKV seems to have a way to extract lpcm and convert headers using profiles but I do not use the program so I cannot tell you how to do it.

It almost worked. The audio played this time, but like previous attempts where I tried remuxing an MKV using the extracted audio and video (not using MakeMKV), the surround speakers didn't have proper reproduction during playback.

So I made an ISO of one of the movies and it played perfectly fine. Since it is only seven movies in question, I'll just stick with ISO's. Oh well

All's well that ends well.

I'm not even sure if I ever muxed anything
I have many early BDs ripped with LPCM converted to FLAC via MakeMKV and have found no evidence of a playback issue. Why do you believe the resulting FLAC file from your conversion is not bitperfect?

Mediainfo reports the original LPCM file having bit depth of 4600kb/s but the FLAC only having 1600kb/s

That is the compressed bitrate. It is expected to be lower than the original. When it is decoded back to PCM the original bitrate is restored.

Ahh, that makes sense then. Pretty much already done making the ISO's however. Not sure if it is worth redoing them for mkv container using FLAC (space isn't an issue).
OK. I am an idiot. I never had the "Advanced" box checked for MakeMKV so I never saw the FLAC profile option so I never tried it that way. Going to give that a go real quick.
I only ever really used MakeMKV for DVD rips, so. Yea. I'm stupid
OK. Works with the MakeMKV Flac profile. Two days of trial and error. lol
