Bookshelf 450$ or less

1014 Views 34 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  ALtlOff
Looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers for under 450$ (pair). Preferably powered but if not that's ok. I found a pair of LSi9's for 450.00 on CL near me so if that works out I may just go that route. Thoughts? Ideas?

Hard to beat those EPOS speaker. But here is at least another alternative -

Wharfedale Diamond 10.2 6.5" with response down to 40hz, which is good for a bookshelf.

A bit below your budget, but the Monitor Audio BX2 are similar to the Diamond, 6.5" Bass driver with just a bit sub-40hz bass.

Similar, though I'm less familiar, the Cambridge Audio SX-60, also with a 6.5" bass driver. Reponse down to a rated 41hz.

I couldnt find those Def Techs for anywhere near those prices. You have links?

These will be run with a PA-120 sub.

Any thoughts on Polk LSi9's?

Basically check e-bay daily, Newegg will run specials there that they won't advertise in their site.
Saw a NIB pair of 350's go for $180 and 450's for $300 last week. And that was on a buy it now, not an auction.
Got my last pair of 450's from Newegg there about a month and a half ago for $250.
Just as an update, I finally bought some speakers, receiver and a sub. First home audio purchases! Still waiting for all of it to ship :/

PA-120 sub ($299)
Def Tech SM-450's ($350)
Yamaha HTR-4066 5.1 ($209)
+cables and what not....

So $900 and I hope it sounds as good as I'm expecting! I hope that the receiver has enough power. I plan on getting an XPA-5 and a pre amp when i get home from this mission and some EMP TEK r55TiR floorstanders, EMP E56Ci center and 2 EMP TEK ES10i's to go with the PA-120. Keeping the 450's in the mix I will have a nice 5.3?

Great, keep us advised as to what you think, don't worry about the power, your speakers actually use a lot less under normal usage than you think, the XPA-5 is a good choice for your end result.
Don't forget to let the SM-450's break in, they will change sound and smooth out considerably with use.
Happy Listening.

The receiver has likely enough power, try it first. I'd get better speakers and subs before bothering with pre-amp/amp. How do you figure the 5.3, though....what are the other two subs?
Well, maybe you can sell me your homemade subs!!!
My friend has two emp tek 10i's in the box that he's giving me for 240$ for both when I get home in December. When I do get home and upgrade to a much bigger setup, I will get an amp and a pre amp. Thats why I've been looking into the emotiva amps. I know thier customer service is amazing. I've still got 8 months to think about what I want to do with the home theater. This setup is just to hold over my hunger for a real system. I'll make sure to break them in before I judge. Should I go easy on them at first for a while? Or should I blast them right out of the box?

Sorry, not for sale! For the cost of one of mine you could have something that's better than all three of your almost-subs (sorry, mid 30s extension just doesn't do it for me)....just sayin' for when ya get home!

I don't see any reason to do anything but use them out of the box, wouldn't worry about the whole breakin thing....I've never waited with any of mine.

Emotiva seems to have amps down well enough, their other electronics not so much. OTOH with high sensitivity dynamic speakers and a good set of subs a receiver will be just fine....so you might check out the diysoundgroup.com offerings, too.
I definitely understand but for 240$ it will be nice just to have even if just for building an inventory. I honestly really want to build my own eventually. I love wood working and this would give me an excuse to buy a nice table router! ( speaker boxes and for the custom entertainment center )

I've got to slowly start upgrading so the wife doesn't kill me!

When it comes to speakers, break in just refers to the time it takes for them to loosen up, not to how to do it, just play them the way you want, you won't hurt anything that you wouldn't hurt under "your" normal use.
ALtlOff and lovinHD you guys have awesome setups. I'm so f'in jealous. I can't wait to put this 10k budget to use when I get home and have a real set up. I'm really liking the mono block idea as opposed to something like the XPA-5.... Soo much time to research :)
Took me a while, too. Don't get too hung up on amps would be my advice (have several hanging around). Concentrate on good dynamic speakers with potent subs (which will need the potent amps more) would be my starting point knowing what I know now. Then again sometimes ya just gotta play with the stuff first.

By use of the word mission I take it you're in the military? My best wishes for a safe return (even if you're not in the military :) ).

jarrellm13, i have the EMP10i10i sub, so the same sub you have, just two subwoofer. As pointed out, it won't hit real low, but it is one accurate and great sounding sub in the ~35 and above category. Kick my Klipsch Rw12d to the curb in terms of sound quality! You would much rather have an accurate sub that does what it does realy well than a sub that tries to do what it cannot do well! Two 10i placed carefully around the room will sound very good, you just won't get any sub 30 hz freq...
LoveinTheHD - yes i'm deployed right now, but just to DC. We have a mission here to prevent another 9/11 and monitor/defend the airspace.
I just feel so overwhelmed at the moment. I always want to have the best toys and its impossible in the audio world because the best is just an opinion. I am going to go check out some Triton One's right now just to see if I can experience pure euphoria.

EliHawk: thanks for the reply man! I plan on using the 10i's in the front with my PA-120 in the rear along with something by HSU. I havent decided on a 4th sub yet. My room that I will creating a HT in is pretty big. Probably near the size of ALtlOff's room but with vaulted ceilings.

I'm actually still waiting on my first purchase of
PA-120 sub ($299)
Def Tech SM-450's ($350)
Yamaha HTR-4066 5.1 ($209)
+cables and what not....
to get here. should arrive thursday. This stuff will just go into the on base housing. a pretty regular apartment living room size.

Well, jarrell, I also own the SM450. Was able to pick up a pair from New Egg for 200 dollars about 2 years ago. I don't use them in my theater, but in a mostly TV 5.1 system I have upstair. Good speaker. Can hit pretty low for a small bookshelf, perhaps due to the passive radiator. Now, finding the matching center (CLR2002) can be a challenge and you won't get a great price there, or at least I didn't...
Btw, thanks for your service to our country!
