Bookshelf suggestions

1885 Views 29 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  zieglj01
Hi everyone. I've spent the last few days looking over the various bookshelf threads w/ many, many many suggestions. I've found a TON to consider and even have some local options that I'm investigating. I currently have a pair of DCM CX-07s powered by a pretty basic yamaha htr-6050 used mostly for gaming/movies, but also music.

Online options:
http://www.polkaudio.com/products/tsx220b
http://www.jbl.com/estore/jbl/us/products/ES20/ES20_JBL_US
http://www.philharmonicaudio.com/folio-me/html/Phil%20Pages/AALS.html
http://www.psbspeakers.com/products/alpha/Alpha-B1-Bookshelf
http://fluance.com/product/XL7S_Dark_Walnut_High_Performance_Two_way_Bookshelf_Surround_Sound_Speakers.eng-120.html
http://www.aperionaudio.com/speakers-by-type/satellite-bookshelf-home-theater-speakers/intimus-4b-satellite-speaker

Local options:

Vintage Fisher XP-55B

B&W v202s

JBL L15s

PSB Image 1Bs

Do you see any on this list that are better than the ones listed up top? I have some B&W 683s already and was considering the v202s, but haven't heard them yet.

Thanks for any input!

Say max budget is 250 and open to suggestions that aren't on my list.

Thanks again.
How do you feel about wood glue? There are several kit options from DIYsoundgroup that are well within your budget, and would be huge bang for your buck. A friend of mine is extremely happy with the overnight sensations.

Your DCM speaker is better than many may think - and better than some entry level

speakers around today.

On Ebay, look at the Boston RS260 speakers - sold each

In search box type Boston Acoustics RS260 Main / Stereo Speakers

The dimple dome tweeter is nice/good

Why not save a few more $'s and match it with your fronts? So look at the B&W 685 or 686

I still haven't made my decision, but now we're considering a bookshelf setup w/ a center for around $300-$400.

Current runners up:

I was also looking at an EMP setup for about 428.

Any additional thoughts?

I mostly use this room for watching TV and playing video games, but sometimes I jam while I play.

Thanks for any input!

I'd go with the EMP over the Fluance just because I know more about them. Cambridge Audio can be a good choice as well.

For gaming and movies, you'll want a sub.

Polk RTi6's, $250 shipped new from Polk's Ebay store. Previous generation of RTi's compared directly to the Polk RTi A3's

How would you rate all these? All 4 options, together w/ a center are about 400-450. The most expensive options are the Boston Acoustics and the Cambridge audio. I'm considering going to Best Buy to try out some Polks. if you had to pick one from this group as being best overall value, what would it be? I'm nervous buying from A4l due to the fact that returning them would be expensive. Thanks again, these suggestions are very helpful.
I would lean towards the Cambrige Audio and the Boston Acoustic.

I would take a look at Winslow Burhoe's Human speaker line. Mr. Burhoe has been designing speakers since 1960 when he first worked w/AR. When he was w/Genesis speakers he developed the inverted dome tweeter. My cousin got a pair of Burhoe blues back in 1978 and still has them. In fact my late Uncle used to play tennis w/Mr. Burhoe at the time. Take a look at the Model 61 completely hand built w/excellent bass. Made in New England. Something to think about outside the box.

I've been auditioning some entry level polks; tsx110b and find them fatiguing (wife agrees). I've also tried some around town: Paradigm Atom - weren't impressed, Wharfedale 10.1 - I think I like these, but would probably get the 10.2 and their smallest center. I'm also ordering a pair of Intimus 5B + 4C this week. I love the chase, but this is taking longer than expected. I'd love to try the boston acoustics or the cambridge audio, but can't find places to hear them. I'm upping my budget to ~$700, but for that I want to be blown away.

zieglj01 - where are you in Texas?

I looked around, but only found diy options. I'd love to eventually build some, but that will have to come later. Know of any places to buy them online fully built?
