Bought It a Week Ago-Didn't Open It!!!

703 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  DavidHir
I purchased mine from BB last Monday with Serenity, Good Fellas, and Doom. I haven't taken in out of the box yet. I even got the 4 year warranty for $39.99. I'm struggling with the 2 competing formats and available software for each.

Anyone else feel this way? It's not a money issue- it's almost like buyers remorse.

Sorry-It's just what I'm thinking.

Dude... open it. Plug it in. Watch it. You won't regret it.

You have a 30-day return with no restocking fee at BB. Why wait?

If for whatever reason (you get a bum unit, you have a lousy display, you can't configure/calibrate it properly) you don't get WOWed watching POTO or Swordfish, you can always return it then.

You're missing out...
Want to lower your level of worry? Rent HD DVDs from BB online or Netflix. And remind yourself that most have found SD discs look superior on the Toshiba too. :D Finally, remind yourself that life is too short to wait 2 or so years to see how this all plays out - assuming you can afford to. I say enjoy today...but to each his own.

1 Excellent response-NetFlix is a great idea. Thanks.

The other 2 remarks-- I will excuse for the need to pound the negative out on your keyboard.

LOL...touche' It did come across as a snide comment...my apologies.

It's a tough decision to make, unfortunately the answer to the format war "probably" won't come out before you have to make your return decision....so you'll have to base your answer on is it worth the cost of hardware and movies vs what i see on the screen? In my case, I say yes. The cost of the hardware isn't bad and the movies for WB titles for $18 (with the current 10% off program at Amazon) means that the movies are fairly priced. My only concern is that if HD-DVD looses, I have an investment in all of those titles. The hardware I can live with...by next year, i will buy a dual player, assuming they are available.

Thanks for the nice responses. I normally do an enormous amount of research on a purchase before I jump- this time the King Cong demo and the other material magically pulled my wallet out.

Thanks for talking me down off the ledge.

I hook it up tonight.
Since the format war will not be decided for a few years, you might as well enjoy in the meantime. Even if HD-DVD loses, you'll still have a excellent upscaling player for all your 480i DVDs. IMO, the "format war" will end up with both formats coexisting anyway (although I could be wrong).

That's sort of my take on it all.

The Toshiba is my exclusive player for all SD and HD (not a bad price for $499). The upscaling is excellent and the HD performance is phenomenal.

If it looks like Blu-ray is starting to win at some point in time, I'll sell the player and movies on eBay. I'm fairly selective when it comes to buying movies (I only own 200 SD DVDs since buying in 1999.....I'll be doing plenty of Netflix'ing with HD) so I won't be out of a fortune of money if the format even fails...and I doubt it will.
