Bought LCD, now what to do with CRT?

1420 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  krabby5
I didn't know where to pose this question, sorry if this isn't the best place.

I bought a Sony KDL-46XBR3 LCD TV which replaces my 36" Toshiba CRT.

I don't really have any other place to put this 36" CRT and I can't really sell it for much (it's a good set, but probably wouldn't fetch over $100). It's heavier than lead and just in the way. I can't just "throw it out"

What do I do with this thing?

Ebay it, and list the shipping as 'actual' so they pay the actual shipping involved instead of a fixed price. Just make sure they understand how much it weighs
Some cities have ebay stores which would handle all of this for you. I'm sure you'd get much more than $100 for it

You could also give it to charity and use it as a tax write-off. They will come to pick it up

Hmm...

I don't even know how I would ship this thing. I don't have the box or anything and you'd need the original packaging to protect it. I'd imagine the shipping alone would cost several hundred dollars. The TV weights probably 150 pounds.

I looked on Ebay and only four auctions for 36" CRT are up, none of which are going for more than $160.
Just craigslist it, if you don't care about the money I'm sure somebody will bite if the price is low enough.
I sold my 32" flat sony for $330 last year and bought 42" Phillips Plasma . I used a craigslist.com. It's very powerful website. Also sold there my car 2 years ago and bought my next car there.
Yeah, Craigslist your old tv and the buyer from your local area will pick it up from your place. No need to worry about shipping or anything.
Make sure you read this if you're going to use Craigslist. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do

My TV isn't a flat CRT, it's a regular "round" one. It is probably (complete guess here) 7-8 years old???

The features it has:

Pip -with like 6 channel previews, two sizes, and four positions

Two antennae inputs (coax cable)

1 Component input

2 RCA input

1 S-video

Some typical stereo surround effect found on these TV's

I think I paid $900 for the TV when I bought it. At the time, the only TV that seemed better were the Sony WEGA's, but they cost more and didn't seem to look any better (this is before HD).

The picture is great, especially with a DVD and component inputs.

All that being said, I can't see anyone wanting to buy this. I mean, why sink $200 or $300 into a TV that is so big/old/soon to be useless with the digital conversion?

Are people really looking to buy these TV's?

If you don't sell it at Ebay or Craiglist you can donate it to your next Fire Station. They will love it and they have a lot of strong boys to carry it. I just sold my 36" Sony CRT for 200 bucks but this would be my plan B.

Yes, of course. For someone on a budget a 36" would be heaven sent. Not everyone cares about digital, especially if they are on a budget. Would also be a great TV for a childs room

I definitely agree with the Craiglist option. Last summer I was able to move some old displays especially since summer school/college students are always looking for decent stuff on the cheap. Plus you wouldn't have to move it yourself

I just called my local volunteer fire dept, and they are thrilled to be getting my 35" Sony CRT in perfect condition. I hate to see her go, she has been perfect in every way. Unfortunately, she just weighs too much to shuffle around the house. Now it's time for the 52" LCD.

Thanks for the great suggestion!
Donate it to a worthy organization.
