Bounce sound off a screen like grayhawk, how well will it work?

At present I'm using a 7' (diag.) double curved hard shell screen, with an old 7" CRT. The screen really works great!

The sound from the projector (Pulsar, electronics made by Zenith) comes out 2 speakers on the front and bounces off the hard shell, and it does sound like the sound is actually coming from the screen.

Here's the question: When I change to a DLP or LCD projector, how well will the sound of a center channel bounce off a screen like grayhawk or other type vinyl/cloth screens (54" X 96").

If you have had any experiments with this, I would appreciate your opinions.

My setup/WAF prevents the typical center channel positions.

Thanks.

Isn't placing the center speaker such that the sound will "bounce" off the screen more intruding and uglier than placing it right under the screen??

Sounds like a really bad idea to me.

It's not a good idea to try that with a flexible screen, I doubt you will get good performance. Doing that on a rigid screen has obviously given you acceptable results, but I think it will be much softer on a flexible screen and the frequency response will be much worse.

If you can't place your center speaker in the regular place, you might consider a perforated screen so that you can place the speaker behind the screen, out of sight.

Thanks Kam, your suggestions are helpful.

I have a line of subs (4 15")just underneath my screen, I may try raising the screen and placing a center there between the screen and the subs; I just don't like the voices coming from below the screen.

So I'll continue to experiment. Or I may stay with a phantom center.

Thanks again.
