I was watching the Yankees game and flipped over to The WB during a commercial and saw a Bounty commercial in HD.

Anyone else catch this?

Outside of the Oscars and the Superbowl this is only the second commercial I've seen in HD (The Target ads were the first).

Yup.

An ad for such a common household product like paper towels could mean that HD is finally getting the push and more importantly the acceptance it needs among more people in the television industry.

Although I can't stand beer I can't wait to see one of those mindless beer commercials in HD :D .

I didn't realize that people watched commercials anymore.

Well somebody better watch them unless you want everyone to move exclusively to pay-tv or have "in show" commercials in the form of obnoxious product placements.

Too late, they are already there.

90% of the time the commercials are more interesting then the programs. Plus you need the break, I get annoyed at programs that DON'T have commercials.

Yeah, someone else that shares my view. I do not have a DVR and do not plan on using one. Being able to record a show when you're not around or at the same time you're watching something else is one thing. But re-arranging your TV schedule so you can skip commercials is silly. I'm a multi-tasker and need the breaks as well. The only time I ever sit down at the TV and actually concentrate on it is when I'm watching a movie...

Many commercials like Nike are shot on film and could be made HD with little effort.

I noticed the Bounty commercial when I was cutting the commercials out of Smallville - damn thing ruined the "commercial detect" in HDTVtoMPEG2 which assumes commercials are 4:3 :)

Cheers!

Yeah I wonder why all those folks that shoot with film, don't do HD :( Whenever I go to the Theaters I check out a bunch of 1.78 film comercials that could be transferred to HD. Some of them are the M&M color, The coca-cola commercials (the one at the beach and C2 escalator)

Sometimes product placements are not obnoxious. It's where everything is going to have to go eventually, so hopefully people will become more skilled at doing it without it being "in your face." The financial success of reality TV has been dependent on it, btw.

Was it this weeks episode?

I ask because I recorded this weeks episode and didn't see it while I was FFing though the ads.

I don't mind product placement. I think it makes it more realistic. I hate seeing people eating Nickers bars and drinking things where the labels have been obviously altered. Now the other blatant, in your face styles, those are annoying.

What!?!?

The point is not to re-arrange your schedule. You got something to do when your show is on? No worries, set it and forget it. Come back and watch whenever you want. And, you have the option of watching the commercials if you really want to. Hell, you can go back and watch 'em in slow motion if you want.

I fully expect to see ads running at the bottom of the screen or those annoying pop-ups already being used to promote upcoming programs replacing traditional commercials in the future.
