"Brand Name LCDs to Drop in Price by 45% This Year"

Did anyone see the show Beyond Tomorrow where they said that a "46 and 42 inch LCD that costs $3500 will cost $2000 later this year"? It aired on the Science Channel last Wednesday.

I can't imagine any manufacturers dropping prices that drastically within the next 7 months, much less the next year or two. Panasonic blew everybody's minds when they dropped their 42" Plasmas by $500 mid-year. A $1500 drop just sounds too good to be true.
My understanding is that 42-inch LCD's will be priced where 42-inch plasmas are now. Plasma retails will fall as well. Wouldn't be surprised to see a $1,000 42-inch HD plasma on Black Friday.
To good to be true? I'd much rather pay top dollar for something nice. You do get what you pay for. I'm of a opinion that price drops aren't in my favor for what I want. I want a really good tv and willing to pay for it. Am I in the minority? Or does the majority just want cheap tv's? Just look at the features lost from these tv's in the last year.
If cheap LCDs/Plasmas drop in price, the 'good' ones will as well. It's the way the market works.
Also, lower LCD/Plasma prices will lead to increased sales all across the pricing spectrum. Hopefully, a larger base of HD owners will yield more HD programming for all of us.

Well just on my Sharp LCD from the spring 2005 (msrp 5400.00) introduction to the replacement model fall 2005 introduction (msrp 3500.00) what was lost:

CMS (color management system) for those who love to tweak!

TVGOS (love it)

DVI-I (which comes in very handy if your going to use a pc and vga port )

VGA

Firewire (nice feature with a digital camera)

Well would these features matter to you? I'm sure will all someday be hooking up a pc to a tv. I guess I'm saying that as long as I can buy a high end tv with features I would like that would make me happy.

Re reduced price implies reduced feature. Let's try some well published ~facts that will affect PQ and price.

(1) LCDs are currently in short supply (so prices have been holding.)

(2) Multiple new production facilities will be coming on line within the next few months. (Including Sharp.) That's why the prices will be dropping.

(3) New LCDs will have improved PQ (Mike has indicated that Sharp's new models due Oct are worth waiting for.) (Syntax Signature series will include the HQV processor, moved from an external scaler costing $60,000 to a non-cheap chip.)

(4) When the hi end comes down in price, the bottom end must follow AND when the bottom end comes down in price, the top end must follow.

(5) The panels & electronics between top and bottom is narrowing.

For months, I've been saying wait if you can. (Not an I told you so, just basic info from this forum.)

Your post makes alot of sense. I agree that tv's will get better and cheaper from supply and demand. I was just pointing out that some features a year ago aren't there anymore. Like you point out that if you can wait it will payoff is correct. I'm sure Sharp will have these great features again. I love my Sharp LCD and it really is a great tv. And I'm sure theres some good ones coming down the road full of features.

What do you all expect the price of 65phd8uk will drop by? If it is not more than $1000, i may go ahead order the 65" now instead of waiting that long.

Thank you.
I think you can find 42" LCD's that are under $3,000 right now, right? I see the 42" plasmas in the low 2K range.....plasma for the same size is usually 15-25% higher, depending on the model.

Maybe a Sharp Acquos sells for the price in the Science Channel piece, but alot of others are much cheaper -- and falling in price -- already.

I know theres a plasma glut right now. Maybe LCD's aren't in as much supply/demand imbalance, but plasma pricing impacts LCD's.
There was a pretty large price drop in the 32" sharp aquos last summer if you knew where to look. I saw a fellow pay ~$2900 for a similar Samsung with a protection plan about two months before the Aquos' price drop. Come to think of it, 45% just about covered it.
Great respect. Very interesting site. Best design. Good content.

Did you catch it? It would be nice to know that I heard right.
Mytek in San Diego is selling 37-inch LCD's for (NOT ALLOWED) (without digital tuner) and (NOT ALLOWED) (with digital tuner). They set up a display in the Ranch 99 market and, although they were in torch mode, they looked pretty good. When I have time I will stop in their store and see what else they have to offer.
I think Mike53 at Sharp said prices will be plummeting this fall as well.

Looks like good news for LCD, my bet to be the dominant display in the coming years.

Plasma still has the pillarbox/static image problem and its not as efficient.

SED is vaporware, and with prices plummeting on all else who will buy it at "Ferrari" prices ?

LCD still has major headroom for development IMO, when we see panels with 5,000 static CR what more will we need ?

Welcome to the LCD era.

I caught the show over the weekend and yep you heard her right. I know prices will drop this year with all the new factories coming online, but I still can't see a 40%+ drop between now and year end. Of course I could be wrong - and I hope I am!
Sony already dropped the 32XBR price, and when the new XBRs come out later in the Spring the current prices will drop.

The previous Sony S line is discounted pretty heavily since it's discontinued.
