Bring Back Black Cabinets!

447 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  MrGonk
I am looking to replace my old tv and have noticed many manufacturers are now going with silver cabinets, which is not only less visually appealing than black but a distraction when viewing. When I go to a movie theater, there is a black strip around the screen, not silver.

What's with the silver cabinets? Is there supposed to be some advantage to silver, or are manufacturers trying to get some sort of space age look?

A strip of low-gloss tape applied to the small surface of the bezel which actually touches the screen should help a lot, especially if most viewing is done under low ambient light. No matter what display tech is used, this surface is lit so brightly by the screen that this procedure would be desirable even with a black bezel. Low-gloss plastics show wear in fine detail, so I don't imagine manufacturers will fix this problem soon.
I've heard that the updated 34XBR910 Super Fine Pitch due out this Summer will have a black cabinet. There's not much info out there yet, but the TV is suppose to be a substantial upgrade.
Yes, drop the silver.
I think silver or champagne/gold are horrible colors to use for tv, or any A/V componet.
I made a mask out of gatorboard and black velvet for my 34XBR800. It looks much better than the silver and as an added benefit enhances the perceived contrast. Total cost = $15.
It looks like you'll be getting your wish. It seems that the new 910 series from Sony will be almost entirely black (except for some silver trim). They look really sleek. And you know how it goes in the CE game: Sony does it one year, everyone else does it the next. I'm happy with my glossy Piano Black Aconda either way : )
