Broadcom Spins Set-Top Chip For Full-Res 3DTV

Quote:
Broadcom wants to take cable subscribers deeper into the third dimension, with a supercharged set-top system-on-chip that has more than twice the horsepower of previous generations to deliver full-resolution 3DTV.

The BCM7422 -- designed for media gateway devices that stream IP video in the home -- provides a 1.3-Gigahertz central processor, along with H.264/MPEG codecs that enable 1080p high-definition video and full-resolution HD 3DTV. The SoC also features a 1-gigapixel-per-second 3D graphics processing unit for advanced 3D graphics acceleration, as well as home networking connectivity including MoCA and DLNA support.

This is certainly a very powerfull chip for use in STBs most likely late in 2010 or in 2011 since it will enable the cable companies or satellite companies to download the same full 3D MVC format used in the 3D-blu ray disks when the home systems are also able to supply the MVC encoded content.

I think the new Brodcom SoC chips will be incorporated in new cable and satellite STBs in the next year since they will probably cost no more then the mutiiple chips currently being used and provide many enhancements and in addition will solve the Chicken and Egg problem enabling them to upgade to MVC output in the future.
