Budget 3.1 or 5.1 setup for 1500

1312 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  smasher50
I wanna get the best setup possible for the money.I'm not a audiophile so I have nothing to compare speakers to since everything will sound better then my TVs speakers. I dont wanna be cheap n catch the upgrade bug months later . the speakers will be used for 60%movies 30%gaming 10%music. Room size is 11x17 I think.

Yes a denon 1613

Then you have budget room for surrounds - this ES20 bookshelf can work

For some decent speakers, I would be looking at some Ascend cbm-170 s for front left/rights and surrounds + CMT-340 center , or some of the Arx speakers . You might also look into the Hsu speakers and subs, you can get a nice 5.1 set with the VTF2 subwoofer for just under 1500 shipped . Another sub to look at in your price range is the Rythmik LV12r .
What about the infinity p363 pc351 and the p163
I have the Ascends CMT-340 and CBM-170. Can't say enough good things about them. They shine whether it's 5.1 movies, 2.0 TV, 2.0 music, or 5.1 music. I also considered ARX, and had to decide on one or the other. I ended up choosing Ascend based on a lot of reading on here and researching professional reviews. I think if I remember correctly the ARXs would have been the pick if I was doing movies only. However, don't take that to mean the Ascends sound in any way compromised when watching movies. The dialog through the center is crisp, clear, natural, "big" (I can't think of a better word), the music and SFX mix through comes through fantastic. I think they will blow away the Infinities.

I have p363 fronts, p163 center, p163 surrounds, these are great for movies, you will not have any issue with dialogue clarity with this setup. Another option, is you could go 5 p163's all around to if you like. The pc351 is an above average center, but p163 performs better IMO. I'm a big fan of regular vertical bookshelf center. I prefer the p363's over the p163 front because I listen to 2 channel stereo without a subwoofer. I use this setup for movies, gaming, and music.

5 identical ascend 170se with dual subs sounds like a good option as well. I may pick up a pair of 170's for my desktop speakers.

They are nice - however, better speakers have been recommended

Your call
Its hard picking speakers without being able to demo them.

fwiw , if you don't mind buying used take a look in the classified section there are usually some good deals to be had. an ex. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1516202/ascend-acoustics ascend acoustic lcr cmt340se's for $550.(says he will split ship. costs) and a pair of ascend htm 200se's for $215( ship. included http://www.avsforum.com/t/1514024/ascend-acoustics-htm-200se-speakers-like-new-pair )this would give you a nice system and save $300-$400 from buying new to put towards a great sub. just an option
