Budget long throw DLPs

1523 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  pottscb
I am in the market for a DLP to throw a 100" image in my 20' long room...I really like all of the DLP models but the only one I've fond that will throw a 100" image anywhere close to that is the Sharp XV-Z12000. Are there any other DLPs under $3K that are set up for long throw or that sell long throw lenses for their projectors?

Thanks,

One time I was looking at Sim2's Domino dlp and it was a long throw, but expensive at the time. They may be cheaper today. I think you'll find it difficult to find a budget priced long throw dlp. I certianly don't know why because a lot of people complain about all the short throw PJs on the market. Good luck. You may give Projector Central a look as they list most PJs and show their throw range in a calculator.
You are probably going to have to go LCD for that throw distance and screen size. A 1080p Epson Home Cinema 1080 would work well.

Why don't you just get a Sharp XV-Z12000 M2?
My room is 20x22 and I was originally dissappointed that my Hd1000u would have to sit 4 feet or so into the room, 17-18 foot throw. My ceiling is 10 feet tall and vaulted so the projector sits down a foot or so. I don't feel it sticks out at all and am very pleased with it now that it is in. I throw a 137 inch image so you will probably be more around 15-16 feet. the projector is maybe a foot behind where I sit and no problems with noise here.

Well, the only answer I have is I don't know...I'm reluctant about buying a 720p right now with 1080p's coming down so fast...and I'm afraid it won't be bright enough to fight any ambient light and I'd hate to run it with a High-Power to compensate for brightness when the contrast would get hammered (might as well buy a super bright LCD with a unity gain screen). I'm on the fence...

Why not try it. With the return deal, all it costs is some testing time. (the refund includes shipping costs.) Seriously, I don't think you could come close to this picture for less than double the price.

Now, if you can wait a year or two but then, who wants to wait!

Yeah, I know what ya mean about waiting, this industry depreciates so fast that it makes me nervous to commit for the fear of something better coming out 91 days after I buy it...can't sit the fence forever, though, gotta live life, right?
If anyone knows of an HD DLP that will throw 100" image at 17-18 ft (besides the 12000 mkII and the PE8720) please post it here.
Eventually, you are going to pull the trigger and buy a PJ
If you are going to make that decision anytime soon the Sharp 12K II is your best choice! There is no better PJ in your price range for picture quality, Period. I don't care if it is 1080P or not, nothing measures up for PQ in your price range. Your screen is not too big, it fits your throw, your only decision is; Do I do his now or wait 6 months or longer for something better. I doubt it will happen in 90 days!

As far as screens, the HP will work for you if your seating is not too far to the sides. But, even a 1.3 gain screen will work fine. Remember, that even as the bulb ages and the picture gets dimmer you can always open the iris to medium and still have better PQ than anything available right now in your price range. Or use the medium or open iris for watching with ambient light. This is a versatile PJ as well.

As I have said in other threads this is a champagne PJ for a beer price. If it fits your situation and you are ready to buy
Don't hesitate and get it now.

Thanks,

From your post it sounds as though you want to place the PJ as far back as possible or port it through a hole in the wall from an ajoining room. Why the restrictive setup?
I'm not sure you'll see much benefit from 1080 vs 720 on a 100" screen. Lots of other factors in picture Q beside pixel count. The Sharp is THE deal right now in sub 3k pj.

If you sit far enough back to get away from SDE (which is like 1.5 screen width) then pixel count is not an issue.

Several interesting threads of 720 to 1080 comparisons have been floating around, and the difference is not that large.

I have 25' ceilings and a 15' drop tube was vetoed by my interior decorator/wife ; )
I just picked up a Sim2 Domino 30H for well under 2K. According to the projection table it will throw a 100" screen as far back as 17' 11". If you look around, Videogon, ebay etc., you can find a Domino at a very reasonable price. The image is very good too.

Good luck

I've been lurking on Videogon, I think you got a fantastic deal...
