Hi everyone, my fiance and myself are building a home soon and I would like to have an in ceiling set up. The dimension of the great room will be 17ft deep and 21ft wide. I'm looking for a good 5.1 ceiling speaker I can purchase. I don;t want to spend an extraordinary amount of money on the speakers. We still have to buy furniture, bedroom set, bigger TV ect. Can anyone recommend some speakers. I was at Bestbuy yesterday and I was looking at the SpeakerCraft AIM8 One speakers. I believe each speaker runs for $250.00 and Bestbuy will do the installation for $500.00 while my house is being built. Are these speakers worth the money? All I'm looking for is a good 5.1 ceiling speakers that won't cost tons of money.

i cant vouch for any specific brand, ive never dealt with in wall/in ceiling products. but if youre looking to save the $$$ for this, you should either talk directly with the contractor/builder to se eif they could incorperate that with your build, or just DIY.

also, seems like a lot of ID sites have super low prices on inwall/ceiling products. youll probably save a ton if youre willing to buy online

Is there any reason you're going completely in the ceiling? In-ceiling speakers tend to be a bit of a compromise, and although they are typically fine for rear surrounds they are far from ideal for the front three channels. Do you have the option of going in-wall or on-wall up front? What are you using for a display? You may want to check out the possibility of using an all in one LCR up front under the TV.

Here is a an example of a recent install of a custom matched LCR.

Speakercraft are excellent inwall/inceiling speakers. You can buy them at less than MSRP though if you shop around.

There are umpteen million inceiling speaker companies, so it all depends on your budget. If you need assistance with specific questions feel free to drop me a note.

I am looking for advice for ceiling mount speakers for back part of open floor plan house. One set dining room, one set kitchen area, one set over living room. Each with separate volume control. Use to play music, so not part of in-home theater system.

Any advice on what speakers to get? Where to get advice?

Want good sound quality for local-area at affordable price.

Thanks in advance.

Do you want the ability to play different sources in each room at the same time? What phase of construction are you at? Are the walls open?

The Moderno lineup at BB are pretty decent, I helped my neighbor put his in and they sound relatively nice, actually quite surprising to me since I am a floorstanding only type of guy as of late. I believe the Moderno is actually made by Sonance. $500 for a preconstruction house seems steep, I bet the contractor would run the wire and rough in brackets for $300. I would have him run double lengths of wire, so if for some reason a wire gets jacked up you have a backup run without tearing up your drywall or trying to fish another line later.

I use the Speakercraft Aim8ones for 5.1 and added Aim8one with a dual voice coil to complete my 7.1 setup. I am extremely pleased but as mentioned before, shop around online -- I did my entire setup for less than 50% msrp.

If you go with that level of quality speaker, you will have to pay a lot of attention to your choice of subwoofer. Those inwalls just won't do the low end, and the result won't work well.

Secondly, even with a decent sub, you will need a good modern receiver with dolby and THX filters that can help scrub the shrillness of the sound.

A receiver with Audessy optimization would get the most that can be gotten out of the kind of speaker layout you are thinking about.

OP,

Pioneer's MCACC on my SC-07 detects the Aim8ones as "LARGE". I use a Klipch Sub-12 and override MCACC to set the Aim8ones to "small".

There is no 'shrill' in my setup even when setting the SC-07 to Pure Direct mode.
