OK... this is a strange and odd question, but enough really bright people read the column and might have an opinion on this.

I would like to build a primitive pre-amp device to take the left and right signals from a set of motorcycle intercoms (NADY) and the output from a pair of Radio Shack powered microphones and merge these into a L&R signal that is fed to my Video camera's inputs. The goal (OK, flame suit on) is to mike the engine, exhaust and student & instructor's voices in surround sound. I race my car and do schools and I'd like to build this pre-amp.

As I understand it, if I simply use 4 separate op-amps as input stages (help set levels) and then using another pair of amps merge the center to the left and right, the L&R won't be mixed. For the rear, another set of op-amps to merge to L&R, but first an inverting amp to feed either the left or right so its "out of phase".

Wouldn't the standard surround decoder then take the center channel thats equal on L&R, and steer it to middle, and take the out of phase information from L&R and send it to my rear speakers?
