Building a Tv stand

12273 Views 25 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  PerfectCr
So my dad is pretty handy with carpentry. He built our kitchen table all of our cabinets in the house, all of our livingroom furniture, and our dressers, but besides that. We just purchased a new tv in June and we currently have this stand from our old tv. The tv is 46 inches and is an LCD. He was looking for ideas because he wants to build a stand. The problem is he cant find anything. He is looking for a design that would hold all three speakers in front and be able to hold all of our media sources...Any input would be appreciated.

Look at racksandstands.com and go to a furniture store. Check out what you like, then make sure you have the space needed for your components. Build plans to your desired specs.
thats an aweful lot of plywood when building your own TV stand, One thing to consider is how much weight it will be capable of holding.
I use a custom TV stand with my Panasonic plasma I based it off of an Ikea stand. It is as sturdy as can be. (much stronger than any store bought stand)

Hey Pendadragoon, how much did that run you.....to make the stand? I'm leaning toward making one myself as well as the ones I find have these flaws (with different combinations):

-Not enough ventilation

-Component cabinets are too tight

-Not wide enough

-Too expensive, not enough value

-Too expensive, excessive value thus not needed

-Not the right color

-Look too much like a T.V. stand

I need a dark mocha/ebony/expresso color stand that's at least 60" wide with sufficient ventilation. Yours looks right on par with what I'm looking to buy/make. I have a 60" plasma that I'll be hanging about a foot to 18" above the stand and therefore need one that looks like yours....more of a low profile component housing than an actual T.V. stand.

I based it off of this stand.

I altered it by removing the doors (cost saver) and making sure each system had plenty of airflow (another reason for the lack of doors) I had my step dad make it for me since he is pretty handy and had the tools, and I have been pretty happy with it. (cost was under $100 and it is incredibly sturdy) I'll have to ask him just what went into making it though since I just gave him the basic measurements and design and he did the rest. (it has a smooth paneling on it to make dusting easier, I know that much)

It is a little wider and taller than the Ikea stand posted though (to make it symmetrical with the materials being used). You might want to make it less deep though, I find that it takes up a bit too much space in that department , and since you aren't going to be putting a massive TV on it, it should be fine.

To second the above, a lot of people seem to use the 'Lack' series from Ikea for stands. Their coffeetable makes an satisfactory [inexpensive, low-profile, modern] solution for big panels.

And matching end tables are eleven bucks.

There's an IkeaHacker mod out there about chopping the legs down to make a slick matching rack out of 'em.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I just found this one on IKEA and looks like it's right up my alley. My plasma's 57" wide and this stand is 58 5/8" wide. Not bad. To top this off, the price is very appealing. It sort of looks like yours except for the legs. Yours look better as they have design while these are just squared. The heigth concerns me somewhat. 13 5/8" does seem rather stubby. I question whether I'll be able to stick my reciever in the cabinets.

For the price, I guess I can't really complain. I've called my local IKEA and they've got 5 in stock in the black-brown that I need. Looks like I've found a suitable solution. Thanks again!

I bite. Could you elaborate more on this IkeaHacker mod?
I custom built mine ... here are some pics..

I have some shelves for it as well - they aren't in there yet, because ive been too lazy to stain them.

I actually have doors for it as well (mainly just some 2" border like pieces, which I was going to inlay glass into) but I figured it would end up getting too hot inside without doing some sort of ventilation and fans, so for now, I have opted to just leave them off.

I built that second one, a "flexy stand" when I bought my olevia last year. I returned the huge drill bits and spade bits after I used them, so it only cost the wood and threaded steel.

I need a new idea for my w4100 coming in though.
Here is my custom built stand for my Kuro 151. Made from Hickory and very solid.

Here is the plan for it.

Finding the correct stand was the most difficult part of my new setup. I wanted wood. I didn't want any glass shelving or doors or anything. I wanted it completely open and wooden. I couldn't ever find that or the correct height and nothing I could find was as solid or sturdy as having my own built. I didn't do this myself, I had it made for me but I am not handy when it comes to that stuff and even though it was custom built it came out WAY cheaper than anything from Salamander or anything else comparable. I ended up with the exact height, length, and size I wanted with the ability to choose color and even had the custom hand holes in the side to make it easy to lift and slide if I need to get behind it.

Man...that size is exactly what I need. I have a 60" plasma that measures 57" in width so naturally, something around the 72" range would be ideal as I want it to be proportionately sound and centered. I figure a 60" stand wouldn't be that.

I really love the color and the heigth on it. Obviously, with a 60"er you need a very low stand. I say since trying to hang the plasma with a good gap between the stand and the bottom of the T.V. would be a tough feat, leaving your T.V. up too high and definitely not at eye level.

I agree on the no doors or glass.....got to keep as much airflow as possible.

This works fine for our old 50" Sony GWII, and could hold a larger TV: LEKSVIK Storage/ TV bench $179.00

It's only 18" high, which is required for some RPTVs like ours that have a high "sweet spot" for viewing (because of the speakers being below the screen) and hence need a lower-than-average stand so the TV doesn't sit too high above center-eye-level. That's one thing to check beforehand - i.e., how high off the ground does your TV have to sit so the center of the screen is about eye level when you're sitting and watching it? This is mainly a problem for RPTVs.

No "tall" areas, but the cubbyholes should hold most receivers and game consoles on their side. I have enough airflow for the PS3 when I put the non-vent side against the wood of its cubbyhole.

Unfortunately, it no longer comes in black, but some light sanding and a can of black paint or stain can fix that. Place a black-painted 2x4 cut to fit under the length of the stand in the center so it will be supported its entire length and not bow in the middle from the weight of the TV. A 2x4 laid flat on its wide side is perfect, since the board that runs down the center of the stand on the bottom has 1-1/2" clearance above your floor, the width of a 2x4. If it ever-so-slightly raises one of the legs above your floor, put stick-on felt strips on the legs and the TV weight will take care of the rest. It's pine and hence lightweight (but also more easily susceptible to dents).

eweiss...man, that's an awesome stand with an incredible price. I really need a black stand. Shame there aren't any more.

Sand or put on something that "primes" the finish (I don't know if it has a light urethane or what) and paint it the color you want. Mine is actually a black stain, not a paint, which you can buy at IKEA (as well as their other stains). It may be a bit of work, but if you want the stand, I think it's worth it. Unbeknowndst to us, our son had bought the same stand for his 61" Samsung RPTV. I ... don't ... know ... why ... IKEA ... has ... dropped ... the ... black ... color. After all, most TVs are black.
pretty retarded, indeed. Why drop the black. I bet the black was sold the most also.

I love how it's only 18"s off the ground. That really helps to keep T.V.s at eye level.

With my setup, if you are sitting fairly upright on the couch, eye level is about 2-3" below the center of the screen. Once you recline eye level is probably about 6" below the center, but certainly not enough to have any complaints about. I have been very pleased with both the audio and video quality from the placement of all components.

That IKEA stand looks pretty good especially for the price - its tough to find large stands for that price. I think I ended up spending about $125 total on all materials to build my stand. What I really like about my stand is something that you cant see ... behind the "DVD" rack in the center, is a hidden compartment (the rear panel of the DVD rack is easily removeable) which is where my Ethereal power conditioner / surge protector is hidden. This allowed me to get the stand closer to the wall, and easily connect and disconnect new components without having to move the stand to get to power, and of course its all hidden.
