This is the link to a 3D video of my HT design I have in my head.

Home theater 3D rendering

Check out the space I have to work with in the attachments here

My question is, what curtains or material should I use for the wall drapes to absorb the most sound?

I do not want these to be acoustically transparent. Just the opposite, I want them to be my primary source of acoustical absorption. I want to really deaden the room-- like a recording studio.

Anybody have input on what fabric/material/foam...these should be constructed from or where to buy pre-fabricated drapes for just this purpose?

None. Acoustical panels (even DIY made with compressed fiberglass) spaced from the wall enough to absorb your desired frequencies, covered with acoustically transparent drapes.

(A dead room like a recording studio is not a very enjoyable room anyway.)

I thought that was the answer I was going to get.

So I guess I will do acoustical panel behind the drapes?

The reason I wanted a dead room was because my computer is the center of my audio/video experience and I was thinking of adding room effects back in in the post processing. However I am sure this would not allow for the room coverage that is recommended.

Any good threads about this?

Personally I would spring for bass traps in the corners, acoustic panels at all the major reflection points on the walls, maybe on the back wall too, and then a nice thick drape (of whatever is convenient or possibly fire-retardant also) everywhere else, unless you don't like that and just want painted walls. That would get you there well enough. People aren't used to hearing deadness in a room, it freaks them out.

Just having the panels and bass-traps puts you ahead of 95% of everything out there to start with, IMO.

There are tons of threads in the construction forum, and on some other DIY forums/websites, where you can see what other people did and then do the human thing--copy them.
