I have an Infocus LP340 DLP projector, and I'm currently using a Dalite Model-B Matte White screen (100" diagonal). The screen is actually too large for my current room, since the projector is sitting on a shelf (rather than ceiling mounted) I'm unable to get the image to fill the screen. In addition, the projector has the known "halo" effect problem.


So, I'm considering building a screen. I would like to make something that I can hang on the wall, as I'm in an apartment I can't do anything permanent. I would also like to make the screen using the recommended gray color, to improve black levels.


The screen should also be masked around the edged to reduce the halo effect. Is there a good place to start? What is recommended for building materials, some sort of solid surface painted gray? Or is fabric the way to go? Budget is also an issue...

I'm going to get a friend to build a screen for me.

Curtain blackout fabric and pine for the screen frame.

I bought (4) fluted casings and (4) decra molding from Home Depot.

I'm going to use the vinyl side of the fabric.

I'm not going with a gray screen since I have already purchased the white blackout fabric.

You don't have to use the angle brackets - you can drill two holes through one of the lengths of wood at the corners and middle (for the center bracing), and glue and screw it.

Interesting... it looks like this screen is built just like a canvas. Has anyone tried using an actual artists canvas? I don't know what size these come in, but if you could get just the right 16:9 format (maybe by masking?) it would take grey paint like a charm!

I'd heartily recommend JP's DIY screen.. if I can make it ANYONE can..


points to note though. 1x2 wood might be a tad bit too thin if you're going for larger screen sizes and may show signs of bending when stretching blackout material.


1/2" screws are a little too big and crack the Douglas Fir.. definitely go for some sturdier wood.. i had a near miss with the wood.. or maybe it was just my inexperience with tools. (screws came with the bracket packing)

Heartily recommend the powershot staple Gun. any electric drill will do.. i rented mine from home depot.


dimmed lights and layed down curtain blackout flat and then turned over half of it on itself.. the decision is then yours on which side to use.. I don't remember which was which.. but if u look very hard.. one side does appear to be more 'reflective' than the other..


Not painting mine grey... expecting CRT projector.. so white it is.
