Bulb Gone

772 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  rickster904
Well so much for Sony's 2-3000 hours bulb life - 622 hours thats all I have achieved and I ran in High altitude mode continuously

This is abysmal and as far as I'm concerned Sony products are the pits .

I'm dumping the projector rather than buy another bulb- I think the company is taking the piss.

Which Sony model ?
Greetings,

I agree that it would be nice to know which projector you are referring to. Regardless I think that you have every right to expect the lamp to last more than 622 hours. How long have you had the projector and have you tried contacting Sony?

Regards,
It can happen to any of them... I've lost a bulb in under 50 hours. I take it you are past the 90 days on that unit? If not most companies will likely give you a replacement for free, you may want to check if you haven't. I just did a write up on steps to hopefully extend bulb life you may want to look at. Bulb’s are the Achilles heals of front projectors. I'm no huge Sony fan myself, but again it can happen imo to any of them.
I just lost a bulb at only 500 hours in my Panasonic AE700. To stay on topic to this thread I plan on calling Sony and giving them an earful :)
Alan,

Are you going for a new bulb or new pj?
I replaced the bulb. Im hoping it was just a weak bulb. I guess I will find out over time. If this one goes down at 500 hours I will not be happy, watch out :)
Bulbs for any projector are a bit of a crap shoot. You hear stories of bulbs in a specific model projector going past 4K hours and other not getting to 400 hours.
Bulbs are a crap shoot, which is why no manufacturer should be advertising 2,000 - 3,000 hour lifespan unless that is the average user result.
Hi Guys, Can I ask a question? First, no lamp manufacturer rates their lamps 2-3000hr, only the TV manufacturers do that. For example if the lamp manu. rate their lamp @ 3000hrs (one number only) that means that at 3000hrs half the lamps are still working. 600hrs on a 3000hr rated lamp is too low, maybe the odd lamp would burn out that quick but your chances of two lamps burning out that quick should be very unusual.

My question is I was wondering if guys with lamps burning out quick like their bass loud? I am not even sure that this is possible (maybe a audio guy could answer this) but i do know that lamps do not like vibration and i was wondering if it may have something to do with sub-woofers?
I agree that projector manufacturers should be clear about estimated bulb life as being either average or MTBF (mean time between failures) and explain how the numbers are arrived at. A bulb warranty of X number of hours would also help.

I often wonder if operating conditions (temp, voltage, on/off cycles, etc) may make a difference or if its pre-ordained how long a bulb will last regardless of the abuse it may receive in terms of dirty filters, high temperatures, or other factors. So far I have 1260 hours on a three year old bulb, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Yes, temp, voltage, on-off cycles, and vibration can effect lamp life.
I got 941 hours (grrr) out of my first lamp in an Optoma. Second lamp is at something like 2400 hours and still purring albeit a little dimmer. Same operating conditions and usage patterns for both lamps. I think it's a crapshoot.

Guys, as I explained above, lamp manu. rated their lamp, "Average Rated Life in hours" (their terms) and this means at the rated life 50% of the lamps are still burning and 50% are burnt out. This is a fact.
On this pj Sony VPL-HS50 I have been running in low mode ,and kept fan running in High Altitude mode also.

I even replaced the air filter at 500 hours !
