Bulb replacement options for Davis DL450

648 Views 18 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Jim Tittle
My Davis DL 450 clone DLP (Viewsonic 830) will need a new bulb soon, and I was hoping someone at the forum might know what newer bulbs will work in this projector.

First, does anyone know is I can use the brighter bulb from the 1500 Lumen Davis DLP (forgot the model#..DLS8 I think)?

I also remembering reading about some longer life bulbs that have come out fairly recently (4000 hours?). Does anyone know if these will work in the DL 450?

finally, who has the best selection and price of these replacement bulb options? I have dealt with AVS often, and if they are competitive in pricing I will obviously go with them, but I would like to have some other options to consider. To avoid violating forum policy by advertising for other vendors, please send me e-mail about any other possibilities ([email protected]). Thanks

I have been informed by a Davis repair tech in Holland (who turned out to get things wrong so go figure) that putting a DLS8 bulb in a DL450 would be likely to cause internal damage as it runs hotter and the DLS8 has a different optical design... Contrary to this is rumor on here that this has been done but I have yet to get a direct "I have done this and it was OK" comment...

The same tech told me that the 4000 hour bulbs where fine for a Davis DL450 and that there may even be a 6000 hour bulb but the pricing he had on it would have been more than 2 x 4000 hour bulbs...

He also said that the (common ??) pulsing problem that can happen with Davis units is 99% of the time a bulb issue and is fixed by new bulbs... Too bad I discovered this after my 90 day bulb warrantee was up http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif !!

I too want a new bulb and would like to know the best source / price asap...

Davis techs here in Norway confirm that using the 150 watt bulb found in the DL S8 and Cinema lineup will burn the powersupply of the DL 450 (standard bulb for this unit is 120 watts)

OK then.... But cheap (or not so cheap) sources for bulbs ??

What do these normally go for ??

I need one pretty soon as I am at 1750 hours.

Hi There

Philips makes the lamps for the Davis projectors - And I'm really wondering about the guy from Holland who said that there was 2 lamps for the DL450 - the case is that the first lamps for the DL450 will last app. 4000 hours but the newer lamps lasts up to 6000 hours - the price is the same.

You can not use the bulb for the DLS8 as this is a 150W lamp - and the lamp driver in the DL450 is made for a 120W lamp and will not fire up the 150W lamp.

Best regards Soren - Davis Denmark
Is that all you have to worry about for specs on this replacement? Just the fact that it is a UHP and 120watts? I found a 120watt UHP here
http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product...0035&loc=14617

but I'm not sure if that is a valid bulb for replacement. It said it was for LCD not DLP.

I've had that pulse thing happen a few times and I'm not anywhere near 2000 hours. I hope I can find a replacement bulb when the time comes.

The two bulbs linked above look different so I am very unsure if this info is correct.... Also how do we know if this is a 2000 4000 or 6000 hour bulb ???

The Viewsonic's come with a 2000 hour bulb so there are at least 3 variants....

Surely with all the Davis users here there is someone that knows of a source of these ??

It seems very difficult to have a clear answer !

I am looking for months information to replace a bulb

for a Davis or clones like the Dreamvision.

It's like a big secret...

Nobody knows the part number, brand possibilities, options

(2k, 4k,...) and where to buy.

I also have the big problem with my dreamvision of the pulse

effect. I know I am not the only one and I am trying to find

a solution. My only hope is to replace the bulb but who knows if it's the real problem !

This is the model number for the Davis 450 and 650 projector bulb.

Part # 2940420 120W UHP Lamp Kit $599.95 (Chatani website-Davis North America)

There was a power buy attempt a few months back but the price was not that attractive.

I have ordered this bulb that robert clark mentioned at bulbdirect . The price is approx.450 to 465 depending on which source bulbdirect uses. There is a 5-7 day wait. They also have a 2 day express delivery. There are other bulbs that are cheaper but these bulbs come without the bulb housing. Also this bulb pt # 2940420 comes with only 500 lumens which is less than my Davis 650 clone (viewsonic 1030). Approx. usage is 4000 hours depending on usage and strikes. I have over 2225 hours on my viewsonic which was rated at 2000 hrs. I use my projector for viewing Dbs, Dvds, and computer gaming and browsing. I have noticied that my picture quality has suffered in that there is pulsing, and the color temparture keeps changing. I use video essentials to calibrate once a month. I upgraded my viewsonics software to eliminate tearing which in itself caused the color to shift to green. So what I am saying is that I donot know if the software upgrade or the bulb degradation is causing the picture problems. I should have the bulb by the end of next week. I hope my current bulb will last until then.

Coug,

Let me assure you that it was revision "L" that causes the green shift. The other color problems are definitely caused by your aging bulb...

Just to give this thread some closure and help anyone looking through this later...

Thanks to Jim Tittle for pointing me to The Bridgewater Group who are able to supply a 6000 hour bulb at $416 + $15 shipping...

According to Jim his bulb arrived shipped direct from Chatani who charge $595 for the same bulb... There has been a little confusion as Jim was told that they thought it was a 4000 hour but I have been informed it is definitely a 6000 hour bulb... Either way it solved my dilemma and as it is exactly the part number on the Chatani site an email to them would clear this one question up...

Awesome, Phat.

Thanks for the link. That's a decent price for a 6000 hour bulb...

Phat or Jim,

Can you please post the number written on your 6000 hour bulb. I have two spare bulbs with the same number as listed on Chatani's site but they are the same number as my stock bulb which is rated at 2000 hours. This just gets more confusing by the day.

that is not quite true...I think the bulb was shipped from Chatani to Bridgewater, who then slapped a new mailing label on the box and shipped it to me.

but the return address label from Chatani is still on the box, so I am sure that Bridgewater got the bulb from them.

Sorry Jim miss-understood you...

I have now had confirm from both the Bridgewater Group and Chatani that these are 6000 hour bulbs...

The only bad news is that Chatani just sent me the following (very worrying) bit of info..
Quote:
The lamp for the DAVIS DL 450 is rated at 6000 hrs. by Philips. There is no warrantee for the DAVIS lamps.
As someone who has had a bulb problem I find this more than a little worrying. I mean is it possible that I can pay $$$ and if it is DOA then there is no warrantee... Or that it arrives, it is put in works for an hour or two and then has failure, or color problems and nothing I can do about it ?? Surely they must acknowledge that faulty bulbs do exist ??

That's good to know. Thanks for looking into this.

I am a little worried about the no warantee situation, so I will keep my fingers crossed until I install my new bulb next week.
