Buy new speakers or projector?

Here we go again. The wife said to ask your thoughts again since we cant do all at once like we planned...

Looking to see what others would do in my situation...

My boat is almost sold and I have to decide between purchasing Paradigm Studio 100's with a cc690 center and denon x4000 and keep watching a crappy projector on my 106 inch scope screen. Or purchase denon x4000 and a new projector and finish my HTPC and keep my Anthony Gallo micro speakers and nht sub.

Anyone been in a similar situation where you cant have it all at once? I guess I was thinking that projectors change a lot faster than speakers so purchasing speakers my be a safer bet at future proofing.

What would you do?

Well you called your projector crappy but not your speakers so it seems you're less happy with the projector, if that's the case, go for the projector.

Very true but it still works just like my speakers. They are both at the point of updgraded. I guess I would put them on the same level.
you should only have to buy your speakers once(and perhaps add to them as more channels are required), but the projector will need to be replaced periodically because it will wear out, or become obsolete after a few years.

ultimately, it still comes down to which is 'needed' more, but technically, buying good speakers now and a good projector later will give you a better theatre at that 'later' date, since the speakers you'd buy 5yrs from now won't be any better, but the projector would be.

but i'd probably still do the projector first unless your speakers are really terrible
What is crappy about your projector.. make/model.. is ceiling/walls treated with a dark color within 5' of your scree? What is the main source for the crappy projector.. does that play into it's crappyness? Is the screen a manufactured screen or a DIY, how does it play into the crapyness.

The boat is either sold or it isn't. Wait until it is actually sold.

this sounds like a man who has sold a boat before... haha
I would not compromise on the speakers.

I would also suggest looking into B-stock projectors (e.g. believe some good deals on Sony HW50 right now) from AVS, and potentially used speakers from Audiogon, craigslist etc..
Building a proper theater takes time as it is rare to spend 40-50k or even more all at once.

I know building mine is a building block progress.

Speakers are at the top of the pyramid as a great speaker set could be enjoyed for several years and possibly several generations of projectors.

That's why I tried to get diamond series b&w... Second item that has the same if not longer longevity is great amplification. A high end screen could also be one time purchase...

Your pre pro, player, projector all go obsolete much sooner...

The projector now would be instant gratification but I would suggest you wait for 4k to come next year or the year after to spend serious cash on a new projector.

You could buy some time and save a ton of cash going used as a stop gap if your current projector is unbearable to watch.

I don't believe we've heard what the pj is.

Depending on how old and crappy, the overall experience could be more improved by a better pj.

You can get a used JVC pj for less than $1k ($5K new) that puts out an awesome picture.
