buyers remorse beware...

2406 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Seltzer
Well I'm worse about paying attention to budget than I thought. Wondering opinions on my impulse purchase yesterday for my HT setup.... All of this is retail outlet and prices, as a first time HT builder I didn't want to venture too far into the unknowns of websites vs being able to take something back to a retail outlet if there are issues.

Background: just got a house, part of this decision was to look for a room with a decent setup for a basic HT, nothing too extravagant, just a place for a front projector and some good surround.

The room that I have for this use is a 11 x 14 den area with a fireplace in the front of the room so I will be doing a pulldown projector screen in the front of the room, viewing distance will be about 9'. There are 3 4x4 beams splitting the ceiling into quarters but hopefully they won't get in my way.

Receipt from purchase yesterday:

Klipsch RB61 - $360 (front)

Klipsch RC52 ctr - $240

Klipsch RB51 - $280 (rear)

Veldyne DLS3750R sub - $450

Denon AVR2307CI - $695

Epson ProCinema1080 - $3750

Da-Lite 92" screen 92843B, matte finish 1.1 gain (IIRC) - $295

How did I do? Should I worry much about buyers remorse for going ~$2k over budget on this?

Eventually planning on adding a pair of Klipsch RS42 speakers for side surrounds, price yesterday would have been $370.

Things I skimped on was taking out the surrounds, going down to a 92" screen and getting the Denon vs the Yamaha HTR-6080 (i think) for $825.

Any comments/suggestions are appreciated.

It looks a lot like my equipment list with a much nicer projector. I think you will be very happy with what you bought. Don't spend a lot of time looking for better pricing if you already bought the stuff locally. I just knowingly paid more for appliances locally that will help the local economy by helping a local business and paying state taxes. I wound up paying about 5% more than I would have if I bought them from an internet dealer in Chicago but then I would have had to lug them up the stairs and hook them up myself too.

Post some pictures and give us a review of the stuff when you get it all installed.
As I was thinking about it today I realized that part of the issue is that I'm not used to spending large amounts of money on myself. I don't have as big of an issue if I'm buying something for another family member or my wife (nothing this large of course). As it is, probably the rest of the issue is that I have to wait, the order will be at the store in 10 days, then I get to pick it up and lug it to my place, but I think it will be worth it.

I'll be purchasing a 35ft HDMI cable and 100' of 14AWG speaker cable from Monoprice, the next step is to decide on a region free/selectable upconverting DVD player. Right now the frontrunners for me seem to be the Zensonic Z500 or the NeuNeo/Helios X3000 both about $300 but I'll have to read some more reviews and see how current firmware updates are working on the two before making that decision.

Will post pix in a couple of weeks when shipment comes in.

Just by shopping at monoprice, you're already saving the hundreds or even thousands of dollars people can waste on cables and such--so let that take the edge off of your remorse. And have fun!

I would agree largely if the locak biz is a mom n pop shop & not a national conglomerate. Put it this way- I don't mind putting 7.35% into the state locally (well, umm that's another subject), but when I can get unit X at 40-45% discount (including shipping) online- and I'm talking into the hundreds of dollars here, I'll darn sure do internet mail order. That saved money is better in my pocket than anybody else's! (grin!)

Either way, Selzer sounds like he has the makings of a cool system!
Yes, it is a local mom & pop shop and the 5% more paid to them was more than worth it not to have to carry them up the stairs and hook them up. Don't get me wrong, I buy a ton of stuff over the internet when it makes sound financial sense - I don't waste no muny.
system is up, all but running the cables in the ceiling.. ended up getting the Yamaha receiver as the Denon hadn't came in yet. also went ahead and got the extra side speakers just to complete the full 7.1

It's all very pretty and sounds great, spent most of the weekend on minor tweaks and calibration and watching a few movies.. hehe

will get pictures taken and up later tonight i hope.

any recommendations on movies to test it with? So far we have watched Serenity, Appleseed, the Animatrix Final Flight of the Osiris (multiple times for setup and such), Casino Royale, and Fifth Element.

Going to agree about Mono Price. You just saved yourself soooo much money. I wouldn't feel too bad and you have some really nice equipment. You should look into getting the HD-A2 if you can, it's $299 at Best Buy and like $243 on Amazon. A really nice piece of equipment!

Congrats and good luck!

yeah, only issue being that I want my upconverting player to do region free or region selectable at least.. I haven't gotten on the HD or blu-ray bandwagon yet.. I think i'll wait for the next format before replacing all of my movies....

didn't actually get the Denon since it wasn't in yet.. ended up with the Yamaha RX-V861 for now, going to check some reviews and see if it's worth the extra $100 to have this vs the Denon

my oppo digital 971 was region free, and i believe the new 981 ($230) is as well. may want to check them out, i was very satisfied with the 971...
yeah, was looking at the Oppo 981 as an option or the Helios x3000 or Zensonic Z500. I think both of those would be nice with the network streaming presuming their firmware updates have helped a bit.
