Buying 2000ft of Cat5e Cable - Which Kind From Monoprice

1472 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  Monoprice_01
Hey Guys,

I'm going to grab two boxes of 1000ft cat5e cable from Monoprice, but I'm not sure which kind I need. I don't need outdoor but should I get UTP standard, UTP stranded, or STP? I am going to be running 5 cat5 drops into each room, 2 for an hdmi connector thing, one for a network, and two for future use that will just sit in the wall.

What else should I run through Cat5 aside from just the hdmi adapters? I figure 5 in each room will be sufficient.

Also, what type and gauge for the in-ceiling speaker wire?

Hopefully this clears something outs for you. You can always use our live support chat, for a faster response. Thanks!

UTP stands for Unshielded Twisted Pairs.

STP stands for Shielded Twisted Pairs.

The ethernet standard uses data packet transmission and error correction. Unlike streaming data transmission, this standard simply buffers and repeats until it has a complete instruction set which compensates data transmission errors.

Since UTP was cheaper in the beginning, it generally became the standard. If you are using the cables for ethernet connections, either should work. If you are using for a stream data system like video tranmission, the shielded should be used.

The difference between solid and stranded :

Ethernet cables consists of 8 individual conductors arranged in the form of 4 twisted pairs. Each individual wire can be made of multiple strands twisted together (stranded) or from one thicker solid wire (solid).

Stranded cables are great for shorter runs up to 100ft. Because they are stranded, they tend to be more flexible and if an individual strand breaks the other strands cover it and you do not loose connectivity.

Solid cables, on the other hand, are great for longer runs more than 100ft. They are not as flexible and if you break a line you need to replace the entire run. But if you need a long stretch and the cable probably won't be moved after that, it's your best choice.

As for the speaker wire:

Different people will have their own opinions about what gauge is proper for what length. The quality of the equipment can also play a factor. The following is a general guide for picking gauges for certain lengths.

0-25ft - 18AWG

25-50ft - 16AWG

50-75ft - 14AWG

75 & up - 12AWG

Hope this clears things out for you.
