Hello,

I plan on buying my dad a projector for his den in the Dominican Republic. He currently has a 32" LCD which cost about USD1,500 last year (prices are crazy there!), which is really better suited for the bedroom.

He has some old bose cube speakers (don't ask), and for christmas I got him an Onkyo 606 receiver and a Sony Blu Ray, all in preparation for this.

I am looking at either the Optoma HD65 or the Mitsubishi HC1600 but I was wondering which would work best for the room.

The room is not really light controlled but has heavy drapes and curtains, during the day there would be some light coming in from 2 windows. Most viewing would be at night though.

Room (in feet) is 9W x 22L x 8.4H

Projector will be ceiling mounted

Wall to be projected on is 8.4H x 9W

There is a fan in room. Throw distance from fan to front wall is 10f, throw distance from fan to back wall is 12f

I was wondering if a 10f throw was too short and if I should then aim it at the back wall. I guess we could nove the fan as well if needed.

Also what would a good screen size be. I was thinking either 92 or 100, what do you think? Viewing distance would be between 10 -13 feet.

Knowing this facts and room dimensions, which projector and which layout would you recommend. Thanks in advance for your help!

Head over to Projector Central and research throw distances for both PJs on their calculator. Your fan may be an issue, it is dead center?. I have the HD65 and I throw a little over 13 feet for a 107" diag (86 wide x 48 tall).

Read reviews on both, I have a bias obviously but I think the general consensus on the HC1600 is its a slight step down from the HC1500 because of the changes made to the color wheel. Good luck.

Fan is pretty dead center, but again can be moved. I am leaning towards the HD65 especially since the picture projects 8.6" from the top of the celing compared to 15.6" with the HC1600. Screen will probably be 92" diag, so might not need to move fan

yeah, the HD65 has a soft offset and assist that with a low profile mount and you should be fine for 92" diag with 8'4" for a ceiling height (unless you want to go big, but 9' wide room will be limiting factor here).

I'd recommend though you get PJ first and play around with picture on wall. I have 107" diag and I sit back at 12' and I wouldn't want screen any smaller. Once you everything set to your liking, make or buy correct sized screen.

What's your fan height? The Mits might actually help if you need a bigger screen and need to mount the pj with the fan in between...

i didnt think of that. i'll find out. so lets say i install a ceiling mount 4" from celing and a trhow distance of 13.1'. the drop down on projector central is supposed to be 16.4".

am i correct to assume that as long as the fan is less than 16.8" in height i will have a unobstructed view of the screen? (distances based on a 100" screen)

Sounds about right. One more thing - what's your ceiling height? If you have enough room to play with, you might be able to mount the PJ a little farther from the ceiling to compensate for the fan.

No. the 16.4" is the image's drop by the time it reaches the screen. (20.4, not 16.8 adding the mount) Your fan is much closer to the projector so you would have to recalculate the drop for a 2-3' distance, giving the image around a 3-4" drop by the time it reaches the fan. (not counting the mount) .

What I moved into my house it had a tall center-of-the-room ceiling fan. I had it replaced by two shorter fans- one at the front of the room and one at the back.
