I would like to get some feedback from those of you in Canada. Amazon.com is now charging an 'import fees deposit' to cover duties and Canadian sales taxes. They also claim that they will refund any difference if the actual fees charged were less than the deposit. Does this refund typically happen? If it happens, does it happen automatically? I am trying to determine whether it is still worthwhile to order from Amazon.com rather than Amazon.ca (as it used to be before). Please share your experience. Thank you.

Well... its kind of funny but maybe true although if the item is less than $20, there is no need for a "fee" as far as the government of canada is concerned.... of course, the provinces are different and "expect" you to "remit" their provincial sale tax to them for anything regardless of where you bought it... :) Sounds like a good "scam". I would be interested to hear from anybody who got something back for "over payment".

I guess ultimately this "allows" a company to setup a "pseudo" canadian company without actually "officially" importing/moving the product to that "said company" which would have "allowed" import customs to be "attached"... but as I said... on "small quantities" by an individual, there is no charges during "importation".

I've done quite a few orders since the "import deposit fee" came in a couple of years ago and have never received a refund. It is still worth it even with the fee a lot of the time anyway though. Just look at the fee as PST+GST (which is about what it works out to) since you will never have to pay anything on delivery. I have done dozens of amazon.com orders to Canada and have never been charged anything else other than what I pay Amazon.com on order.

I have gotten refunds. They usually take from 3 to 6 months to happen though. I think the feds do their thing quarterly or semi annually and Amazon won't move until they get paid. If you can afford to cover the float then it is a hassle but you do get it back.

And this happened without any action from you?
