I edited to consolidate the opinions and new options:

I have been researching tv's for over a month on this board and everywhere else I could find one, but I have now come to a crossroads and need some direct advice for my current situation. I am currently running a Sony 46Z4100 LCD, which I really do like the picture. However, I was wanting something a little larger and think I wan to switch back to a Plasma and have always wanted a Pioneer. Viewing distance is roughly 12 feet, in a medium sized, very bright room.

So here are my new options:

50" Pioneer 500M ($2k)

58" Samsung PN58B860 ($2700)

60" Kuro PDP-6020FD ($4k)

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

interesting dilema everybody always say go as big as you can and I say that to but in your case I am not sure. I think the picture between the samsung and pioneer would be close . But if you really want the very best picture and to fulfill your wish of always having a pioneer you go with the pioneer but if you can handle a picture thats about 95 percent as good go with the big sammy and since your coming from an older tv and that would be your frame of reference I would go with the bigger sammy.

My thought for Category 1 is getting the PN58B860.

Category 2 get the 60 Pioneer.

I would choose a 60" Pioneer if you can afford it. I was just looking at the 60" Elite yesterday and thinking "wow." The KUROs are hands-down the best TVs available right now. But I would not get a 50" for your viewing distance. It's too small. It's cheaper to sit closer.

If I were you, I would wait for a new 3D capable TV. Even if you don't use the 3D part of it, you'll still be getting a top of the line TV. If, however you buy a current TV and then see 3D later and want it, you might regret not waiting. Of course if money is no object, then you can get something now, and then sell it to get 3D, even though you would take a hit financially.

I know everybody says to "Go Bigger!", but that probably depends on how much standard def you plan on viewing. Having just migrated from a 47" inch LCD to a 50" plasma, I was surprised by how much worse the SD pictures looked. We sit an inch or two less than eleven feet from the tv and that 3" really did make a difference. I can only imagine trying to watch it on a 58 or 60" set.
