Buying Plasma Need Help Pioneer or Panasonic

2060 Views 29 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  valhallak
Hi,

I'm planning to buy a plasma this weekend.

The two models im thinking about are:

Pioneer PDP-4361HD

and

Panasonic TH42PX50U

Is it better of going with a 43" Pioneer with the model above or save some money and get the Panasonic. Or Maybe get a 50" Panasonic TH-50PX50U ??

What are your thoughts about this. I dont know much about the pros and cons of these plasma.

Thanks

If you throw in that third display, then yes, go for the 50". High def will scale better than the 42" models, a have a slightly better picture quality regarding detail. Also, as in real life, bigger is always better!!! :D
bump need more advice
Go with the 50in. The pictures are comparable on both the Pioneer and Panasonic. The Pioneer does have an additional HDMI connector I believe but the larger screen would be the better route IMHO.
Go with the 50" if you can swing the $$$.

I have the 50PX500U and love it !!!!!

Great out of the box, I'm not a tweaker for settings and such. Maybe it can look better if tweaked, but to my eye I'm very pleased.

The next question is can you find a 50" Panny in stock anywhere ?
1. Pioneer vs. Panasonic has been discuessed everywhere on this board, someone should just make a sticky of it.

2. Also it would be easier for us to help you if you could let us know your setup, what equipment, and where you want to put everything.

3. It seems like your shopping at Best Buy, I believe some stores are going to get some 50px50u's, not a whole lot though.

Picture quality: both are great set. Panasonic are said to have better blacks and more realistic colors. On the other hand, Pioneer always have that wow factor in their display's color, the color just kind of pop out at you.

Exterior look: Panasonic is black with silver speaker and silver stand. Pioneer is piano black finish with a low low stand and detachable speakers.

Feature: Pioneer has more features than the Panasonic from picture in picture to separate memory for each input and various other things. Biggest feature of the Pioneer would be its media box, the brain of the tv, everything connects to the box, 2 cables go to the TV. Panasonic on the other hand has 2 component inputs along with 1 HDMI input. No front/side inputs at all, all inputs are in the back facing downwards. Pioneer's media receiver gives you 2 HDMI and 3 component video inputs. You can put away the media receiver in a drawer as long as it is still connected to the tv, the tv itself has the IR eye to control the box, which controls the tv.

ps. I apologize made a mistake anywhere as I have been up all night studying.

- Better colors on Pioneer

- Better black on Panasonic

- Less noise on Panasonic

- Much more features on Pioneer

- Nicer bezel on Pioneer

- Media Box with many more inputs on Pioneer

- Pioneer is much brighter

Choose which is most important to you and the costs! At the same price, I would pick Pioneer... but if more expensive, then you need to see how much more is it worth to you.

You cant go wrong with either Panny or Pio, pick the one that fits your budget and your eye and dont look back.
well im planning to put this in a living room, very open area, a lot of light.

i decided not to go with the 50", ill stick with something smaller.

now its between the pioneer and the panasonic. Price has no effect in this case.

I'm thinking my best bet is just to go with the pioneer.
The Pioneer has better picture, features, and looks than the Panasonics. Anyone who says different...owns a Panasonic.

Or they're trying to trick themselves into saving $1500.

Just my $.02.

I own a Panasonic in a very open and 'light' Hearth room. I'll be replacing it with a Pioneer soon.

Your $.02 is worth just that! Just my $.02.

Go look at all the sets you can at different stores and different set ups if you can and decide for yourself.

I agree with all but one of your points.

Less noise on Panasonic.

I don't see any noise on my 5060. None. Both HD and SD are sharp and clear with no artifacts. I must have a very clean signal. Thankfully.

I own both a 43in Pioneer (1yr old) and a 50in Panasonic (1 month old) and there is not much more than a dimes worth of difference in the picture quality. In some respects the Pioneer is better and some the Panasonic is better.... oh and it depends on what you find most pleasing or most irritating. To some a little noise makes no big difference if they are far enought away, to others it is a big issue. To some the colors of the Pioneer are almost too punchy to the point of gaudy ... to some they are vivid and realistic. to some the Panasonic has less vibrant colors to others those same colors are more natural. So i agree with the person who said go look for yourself and decide. In any case in a large open room i would get the 50in ... it is amazing how an additional 7in can affect your perception of a picture.

The OP has already done so, and has now come to AVS Forum to get our opinion. Mine is that Pioneer makes the best plasmas available. The picture is not much better at first glance, but the Panasonic struggles mightily in my experience with progressive scan (non-upconversion) dvd signals, and has had many documented problems pulling in medium-to-low power hd OTA signals. The Pioneer has better connectivity, the option on the xx61 models of the media box, and a slightly better picture (obviously, this is just my opinion). It also seems to do better with non HD material, IMHO.

Telling someone to just decide for themselves after they ask for your opinion is not helpful at all. No reason to be antagonistic when you don't even offer an opinion yourself.
OK, heres my opinion, GET THE PIONEER. I don't need to give comparisons since it been done over a million times. You won't regret your choice.

since when is saving that kind of jack "tricking yourself?" if thats a trick, i wish i were a magician.....

and i bought the vizio p50 so i "tricked" myself into saving a grand over the panny and 2 grand over the pio....and got almost the same performance.

That's the opinion that is best delivered here, after the two camps giving their opinions of which one is best! "Which picture is best" questions are akin to "which speakers sound best." Go see for yourself armed with the knowledge of what others find important!!
Is Pioneer exiting the plasma market? I thought I read either that news OR a rumor here at AVSforum.com. If so that would be very interesting...
