I understand that i need a RCA phono cable to connect the subwoofer-out on my receiver to my powered subwoofer. If I want to build my own cable - can I use RG6 cable or what is the best to use if building my own cable. The run length is about 15 feet.

Well, some of the best cables are coaxial in design, and I don't see a problem doing this at all. It will have excellent shielding, that's for sure.

try to get a cable with as much shielding as possible...

I went to Home Depot and got their Coral quad shielded cable, sold by the foot for about 47 cents per...

Or you can get Canere cables which are about the same price...

It is much harder to get good quality gold plated RCA jacks though...

I've used coax specifically for the shielding on a long run (I had an interference problem). Just use high quality RCA plugs and it'll work great!
