Cable Cards?

548 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Karyk
I have Comcast digital cable. Next week, Comcast is going to install a cable-card in my new Sharp LCD television. Since cable cards have only been available here (San Francisco Bay Area) for about 8 months, I'm interested in hearing from people that have this service. Specifically:

1. How is the performance

2. Did the installation go smoothly?

3. Any other issues?

I have one from Comcast and it works great. I've had 3 instances over a month period where it had to have a "push" done on it as I lost my digital/HD channels. Once they did it however, everything came back in 5 mins. I also have the DVR box on the same TV and I think the CC has a better picture. If you don't miss the guide an On Demand you'll like it.

Many different stories & experiences. Definitely worth a read.
What do they charge for the cable card, and how does that compare to what they charge for the HD DVR? If they're within $5 of each other I don't know why you'd go with a cable card (unless maybe they require a higher service level to get the DVR).

This has to be a super-clean install with a lot of wife-factor stuff going on. The LC37 Sharp is being mounted in a bookshelf...the various components have to be as invisible as possible. My DirecTV box can go in the cabinet and be controlled via RF...a DVD player can go in the cabinet but doesn't need as much interaction via remote as a set-top box, so that's OK. I don't want to deal with another "box" for the Comcast stuff, so the cablecard will guarantee a super-clean look.

Ah, yes, the wife factor. My wife thought I was nuts when I got a DTivo. Now I'm still paying DirecTV $50 a month because the wife won't give the thing up (I record network HD material OTA).
