The cable you posted has an optical at both ends. A mini on one end and regular size on the other. About the only device that can use that is an Apple Airport Express.

If I'm correct you need a 3.5 stereo analogue on one end and a regular size optical on the other? That would involve a converter.

You should just use a cable that has a 3.5mm on one end and RCA plugs on the other end.

The 3.5mm is an analog stereo output; it is two channels only, so just stick with analog signals.

There is no advantage to converting the analog signal to optical, particularly with a cheap converter that will possibly degrade the signal.

Is this to go from a TV to a receiver? What model TV?

If so, and if you want 5.1, there needs to be an optical Toslink or SPDIF digital output on the TV in order to obtain the 5 channels.
