Cable question

515 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Rupert
I use a coaxial audio cable & s-video cable for my home theatre and I have a yamaha amp/receiver.

My question is: every time I switch from my satelite dish to my DVD player I have to unplug the coaxial & s-video from the satelite to the dvd & vice versa. It's a real hassle to go behind me entertainment center to do this all the time. Is there a Y-adapter or something for these 2 cables?

thanks

You shouldn't have to do this. What's the model number of the reveiver and your TV?
I will check tonight & let you know.

The yamaha amp is only 2 years old & only has RCA jacks (no S-video in or out) and only has a digital coaxial in (not out). The tv is 6 old and only has a S-video in and RCA jacks for audio. Since the amp does not have the inputs or outputs I need, I am forced to run everything straight from the tv to the DVD or satelite receiver.
The amp is a yamaha HTR 5730

The TV is a RCA Colortrak 2000 model F206071ES

I could run RCA cables into & out of the amp but not S-video & digital coaxial audio.

thanks for the help.
The Yamaha has two optical ins. Does your satellite dish or dvd player have optical out? What are the other inputs on the TV besides s-video?
Neither the satelite dish or the DVD player have optical outs. They only have the digital coaxial out. Also, the amp does not have an s-video in or out.

So, I am I screwed here. Is there any way to resolve this problem without buying a new amp, or satelite, or DVD. I have never heard of anyone else having this problem

Please help!

Is there really no such thing as a y cable for s-video and a y cable for digital coaxial?
I couldn't find a manual for the TV, but I assume it only has one s-video input. If so, you just need a switch like this:

Use one of the RCA inputs for the digital audio and you're all set.

A splitter might work, but a switch would be much more appropriate. You wouldn't want to feed two signals to the receiver at the same time.
Why take a chance on "Y" cables for just a few bucks in savings over the switcher?

If the "Y" does not not work or works poorly (fairly likely, IMO, on the S-video), you are out that amount or at least the return shipping and hassle.

Besides, you can run down to your local WalMart, Best Buy, Home Depot, Radio Shack, et al. and buy the switch box. You'll almost certainly have to order the s-video "Y" cable.

Get a coax to optical converter

The TV doesn't have a composite in?

thanks for all of the info,

I didn't even think about (or know about) a switch. it looks like a much better alternative to a y cable. I will get one.

The coax converter won't help much because the OP's receiver doesn't do video switching. He needs an s-video switch and these will also switch coax digital audio.

Why would he want to use composite when s-video gives you a much better picture?
