CableCARDs (SA) failing in Maryland

Here we go again    ?

Comcast in Maryland has stopped issueing Scientific Atlanta CableCARDs with firmware 149 in Harford and Howard County, Maryland - a sizable and affluent market. Other counties use Motorola cards and are fine.

They report numerous cards going into the endless firmware download loop, which began about Dec. 7 late at night.

No fix in sight.

To be fair to Scientific Atlanta, the previous problem last year was Comcast. This could be similar. However, Comcast here has moved away from SA STB's, my previous SA STB a few years ago was a real POJ. New STB's are PACE boxes. My SA CC on my other set is firmware 148, working fine through all this. It is occasionally quirky, however, very slow to change channels, occasionally freezes. The Sharp d7u's have been nearly flawless throughout.

Is it time to junk Scientific Atlanta products ?

My card failed today after 3 months of operation. It was a replacement for numerous failed cards before that. So now I have to start the process all over again.
Was it an SA card by chance ?
Chances are it is something the local system is doing. S/A cards are in place all over the place without the problems you describe.

About the time some bored headend tech would be trying to tweek something he shouldn't have?

A little harsh, don't you think?

It is, but luckily a push from the headend did the trick.
Well, SA has been putting out some junk for quite a while, the latest here is that we think a large batch of bad cards were distributed.

Harsh - well, Comcast here has been moving away from their boxes. Time to change CC's as well. I have had 6 SA CableCARDS, my 7th is coming next week.

That is what tells me it ain't the card, but the operators!
