Does anyone know the exact percent of black in a gray (GrayHawk style) screen? What I mean by percent black is, when you create CMYK color, you start with white (ie. C=0, M=0, Y=0, K=0). You then add the various shades to create you color, in our case gray.

What I'm looking for is the number to use to create the best screen color for the VW10HT. I have heard people refer to the Kodak 18% card, but is this the same as C=0, M=0, Y=0, K=18, AND is this the same value as the new gray screens?

Wouldn't it be much easier for someone to walk into Home Depot and request a specific color value that the paint guy keys into the computer vs handing him a gray card and having him try to color match it?

Thanks,

I'm not a paint scientist and don't know what the numbers mean exactly, but I ordered a quart of flat white paint from a local do it yourself center. They added 15 black. The book they had said B-15. I'm not sure if this is a percentage number. I thought it was a tad too dark so they then added more white. When he added a very small amount of white he said : "20 should do". Whatever that means.

The color that I ended up with is close to the GrayHawk gray. I think I may go back and mix to just a little lighter, because upon projection testing with my Sony 10HT the blacks look better but there is just a little to much brightness loss in the whites for my taste. I think another "20 should do." http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

In the end, if the B-15 is a percentage number from my case, then I would suggest about a 12% to 14.5% black added to white to get a very close to grayhawk gray. Your mileage may vary.

Screen...what screen? I don't even have a theater room!...YET! Actually, my dedicated theater room is in progress (about 80% complete). I'm just now begining to search for options for the screen. I'm a DIY'er, so I was hoping others would have input about the paint mixture percentages.

I'll post images to my web page when all is complete!

P.S. My ref to the VW10HT is not because I have it, but because right now it looks like the winner for my taste/budget. This may change after the room is complete and I'm ready to buy. I'm trying to hold out for the new 16 x 9 DPL!!!

I made a 106" 16x9 frame from 1x2's and stretched blackout curtain material around it fastening with a staple gun as I went. I then painted this surface with my gray paint mixture. It works quite well, it is very flat, taught and cost only about $36 for the entire project. Hard to beat that. BTW : I had to sand a few paint blemishes out to get a very even flat surface.

If you do a search on this forum you can find lots of information on the blackout curtain material.

What was the mixture you used? Or...is it a trade secret? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

BTW, I have searched the forum for the DIY screen topic and have alot of good ideas for construction. However, the color is probably the most important aspect of the project.
