Could anybody help in this situation please, thank you

I'm the owner of Denon avr 1910 (HDMI able). The source of movies is Asus laptop (OS Vista) or PC (OS XP). I would prefer to use PC for source because of better performance, but

Laptop has HDMI (v1.3), so no difficulties to connect avr to laptop through HDMI. With the K-lite codec pack (AC3filter included) I am able to output DD from PC instead of PCM (DD indicator is ON on the avr). I am using WMP as player.

Concerning PCvideo card is HDMI supported with 2xDVI outputs. Using SPDIF cable I connected integrated sound card and video card. Using DVI - HDMI adaptor and HDMI cable I connected PC with avr. Everything works: video and sound are outputted from PC, but only as PCM, and I can't force PC to output DD I tried the same codecs as on laptop, tried the latest version of the same codecs, tried to install separately the newest AC3 filter, tried to play with WMP, MPC, VLC options but no results - avr indicates only PCM received. Definitely it's the problem of PC, not avr couse it works fine with the laptop.

Is it just to do with some options on codecs, players, OS or something more I'm not aware? As far as I know SPDIF could be able to output DD and DTS. Maybe I should try other codecs or other players?

I appreciate for you help or guidances, thanks again.

Was this adapter one that came with your card or did you purchase it separately?

If you run SPDIF directly to the AVR does it work?

No, I purchased adapter separatly, but the same MSI manufacturer as my video card.

The integrated sound card don't have any SPDIF OUT, I meen optical/coax. It has SPDIF OUT connector on the mother board what I'm using. Of cause I can buy external SPDIF cable with coax end and try to connect directly to avr, but I need to buy other SPDIF external cable.

That may not matter - unless your card specifically states that it will pass audio over DVI with that actual adapter it's not going to work.

It states in the mother board and video card manual that this connection tipe (SPDIF to video card, DVI-HDMI adaptor, HDMI cable) will carry video signal as well as audio, and actualy it does. I'm getting video as well as audio signal to my recyver, just the problem that it is PCM, not Dolby Digital.

I think it's the problem of PC and some options...

Most likely it is software related, not hardware.

Either your player or your filters/decoders are passing through PCM audio and not down-mixing it.

You have to check for the option of PCM/AC3 Downmix/DTS Downmix.

What video card do you have?

Check Sound Settings in your PC and see the options for the SPDIF line. Disable PCM if its there and only allow DD/DTS.

Also, keep in mind that XP and Vista configurations are not the same. What works in Vista may not work in XP.

Thank tou guys for the help,

It seems I mannage to solve the problem. The key option was to check on AC3 to use not DIRECT SOUND (as was by default), but to check Wawe ...or whatever, don't remember exactly.

In this case avr sees Dolby Digital instead of PCM. Thanks anyway guys.
