My sister recently purchased a Samsung LN46A650. I noticed that when she scrolls up and down on certain sites on the internet, I can see very faint dark blotches on certain areas of the screen when viewing sites with solid colored backgrounds. I probably don't have to scroll up and down to notice them but it's most noticeable when scrolling. What is this called and is it normal?

BTW, the problem can also be seen when viewing movies and shows whenever the camera is scanning around the scene and the background is solid.

I wonder if your are seeing the same thing I have noticed on some 1080P LCD sets. When an image with high detail is moving, I see some blocking in the image that goes away as soon as the image stops moving. I just posted a thread asking if others see it too. I noticed it on movie content. I try freezing the image to look closer, and the image blocking/breakup is gone once it freezes. Try moving a window side to side, I bet you see it then as well. Is your computer set to the panel native resolution, 1920x1080 @ 60hz? I am wondering if this is scaling issue, or something else.

Sorry but you're not seeing the same problem as I am. Here's an example below. I made it using MS Paint so it's obviously not going to be 100 percent accurate but it gives you an idea as to what I'm referring to. I can see it clearly when scrolling up and down or when viewing movies or shows when the camera scans around solid colors. It's faint and isn't a huge problem but it IS annoying. To me at least.

I'd bet you're seeing very faint "banding"; sections of the panel, usually in a uniform pattern have dark and light spots or stripes.

Is banding a defect or is it something like back light bleeding that the warranty won't cover and she'll have to live with?

I must have stumped the experts. Or maybe my illustration is just too horrible?

To me, what you are seeing maybe the "uneven backlight problem" that plagues a lot of LCDs. On some it is horizontal banding, on some vertical banding, on some Sonys is was "clouding". But without seeing it in person, its kind of hard to tell.

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing the problem was an uneven back light problem. It also could have been horizontal banding. She's going to return the unit this weekend so hopefully she'll end up with a better unit. Thanks for the info.
