Your regular DVD drive uses a red laser. A red laser cannot read data packed as finely as is contained on a BD or HD DVD. Both use blue lasers, which have much shorter wavelengths.

Just for accuracy sake.


DVD = 4,700MB per layer.

BD = 25,000MB per layer.


Several BD players (Sony & Pioneer) can't play CDs.
