Can HTPC perform PAL to NTSC conversion ?

Hi

I am new to HTPC and still building my computer. One question. I got some PAL DVD from Asia. Can it be played by the HTPC on the NTSC display ? Do I need to rip it to the hard disk ? I hope to play them directly from the HTPC's DVD drive.

Thanks

sure, no problem (if u actually got the DVD's, why don't you just try?)
It really depends more on the capabilities of your screen than on the pc. It is not trivial to transcode PAL to NTSC, but some TVs (and all European) can play both, so no transcoding is needed. If you have a DVI or VGA connection on the TV, you can also output the NTSC resolution and let the PC scale. Many US TVs do not have any of those capabilities, though.
I am using an ATI card with the component adapter and it outputs anything as NTSC (it doesn't support PAL resolution). On my old GForce2 I can select if I want to output PAL or NTSC, so I really think the capabilities of your PC are relevant here.
