I've been following the digital board for some time now, after viewing a sharp 9000 in a light controlled room. I thought the picture was very good, but didn't know as much as I know now about what to look for. I did look for rainbows on my second viewing along with my wife. I thought she would say that it looked great but too much money. But no, she said "The picture is too small for the money." If the picture was bigger we could get it. The salesman told us that we could go up to a 120" diagonal screen but that would be the largest that could be done without losing clarity. I went home and with my wife measured the walls to see how large it would be in our ht room. Not as bad when you do it at home, but she still thought it should be bigger.

Anyway, been looking into DLP's ever since, just haven't pulled the trigger. The reason I haven't come over to this board is the salesman told me to get a picture that was comparable on a CRT I would have to spend at least 30k. Thirty thousand is way too much; the cost of the Sharp is pretty much the limit of my budget for a projector. Also, he said with a CRT you need to have professional installation and support.

Ok, here’s the question: Can I get a CRT be it used or the like that can perform better than the Sharp? I live in Northern Jersey and would love to find a dealership that deals in used CRT’s and would be willing to help me install and maintain the machine. Even better if the CRT can make a better picture on a larger screen than the Sharp.

Thanks, Anthony

Anthony,

The CRT picture will be better than the DLP but one limitation of most CRTs is you want to keep the screen size around 80"-100" diagonal because it is dimmer. You can definitely get a used CRT projector that will put out a fantastic image in the Sharp's price range(actually cheaper) but you will have to buy either a scaler or HTPC for it and your screen size will need to stay in the 80"-100" diagonal range. So, if you want a 120" diagonal screen size you might look at a used DILA projector or stick with the Sharp DLP. The Sharp DLP should be able to sufficiently light up the 120" diagonal screen.

Thank you!

That's a shame about the screen size.

I should note that when I looked for the rainbows I ddin't see them.

We stayed and watched dvd's for over an hour so I think we can both watch DLP.

I already have a computer attached to a 62" 4x3 pioneer, which could probably be called a HTPC so that doesn't concern me too much.

Thanks for the help, Anthony

What size room do you plan on putting the projector in? I used to want the biggest screen possible and have changed them a couple of times.

I am finishing up my HT project after two years very soon and I settled on a 96" X 54" inch screen which I think will do the job. I am not sure what that measures diagonally.

For a lot less money you can get a much better picture with a CRT and scaler. You would probably benefit from having a professional set it up. But you would still come in for less money and get the movie experience you want.

The other projectors are simple to set up and are much smaller than CRT projectors which can get pretty big.

Where do you live in NJ? I am in Montclair.

Good luck
