Can I get any better than my LS50 for less than $700? (and a comparison of the LS50 and the Wharfedale 225 pg 3).

I'm always on the hunt for a bargain. I took advantage of the recent firesale of the original LS50 and got a pair new for $888. I also have a pair of Wharfedale 225s (enjoyable as warm speakers, but not as much clarity as the LS50).

Considering these speakers have technology from 2012 and 2015?, I'm wondering if there is a bookshelf speaker that I should consider that will have clarity and a range of around 50hz-30k hz? And will cost less than $700.

If there is, then I'm interested in selling both the LS50 and the 225 so that I can have a little extra money in my pocket. I'll continue to use a subwoofer if necessary (but I'm willing to sell the sub too, if the speaker provide sufficient bass).

If there is nothing under $700, then I'm more than willing to keep the current setup.

TYIA!

P.S. I don't prefer the Klipsch sound.

Emotiva's B1+

And frankly, anything over 20kHz is useless because you're never going to be able to hear those frequencies. Depending on your age, you might not even be able to hear anything much beyond 14kHz, so I wouldn't worry about a speaker reaching 30kHz.

I know I can't hear anything more than around 14.5kHz, and I'm not that old.

It isn't that I think I can hear 30k hz, its more that I don't trust the specs. I know I can currently hear up to the mid 19k hz. So, if a company says it goes up to 30k, then I anticipate it will actually measure around 20k.

And the Emotiva B1+ are a solid suggestion. You've heard them?
B-stock Chane L3 for $690 pr. I bought a pair a couple of months ago and they were blemish free. I could not be more pleased with their overall sound and build quality.

A larger bookshelf speaker with big, full, open sound and clarity in spades (the ring dome tweeter is very special in these), and plenty of bass, so in a smaller room for music a sub may not be necessary. In my 11' x 13' room I seldom use my sub with music, though I do for movies.

There are countless good speakers at or under $700.. The b1+ are good, the chanes probably as well..I'd look into revel m16, elac dbr 62,jbl 530, wharfedale evo 4.1...but the emo b1 + is really good at the price.. You will need a sub though, they are probably about the same as the ls50s in that respect..

I'm am actively reading through your thread "logical upgrade from Emotiva B1". Want to spoil it for me and tell me what you chose? and how you like it?

Nice looking speakers. Did you put the Police album up front to hide the Milli Vanilli album behind it? :)

Does your electronics (receiver etc) have pre-amp outs? If so, consider these:

Review/measurements:

Keep your sub. Running one is as much about limiting excursion/distortion in the mains by HPF'ing them as it about low frequency extension.

I've never heard this brand before. What about them are B-Stock? Any listening fatigue?

I don't have pre-outs. I didn't want to share that I'm using a Rega IO. Many people mistakenly think that 30wpc is too little to drive speakers, so they don't suggest speakers that "require lots of power."

Inputs/Ouputs are limiting, but I've found that the Rega IO has been excellent with a wide range of speakers

I will.. I ended up sending the b1s to Dennis Murphy.. He worked over the crossovers.. I now have some sub $500 speakers i would put up against anything under $1000, especially for clarity and imaging...the only problem there is: Dennis only wanted to do that once.. Although if you are inclined to diy he posted the mod on the asr b1+ review ( several pages after the review)... one weakness they have is they need a sub.. The other is they aren't very sensitive, you need big watts to get them to fill up a room... Other than that i have nothing but great things to say about them..and the 2 "weaknesses" were expected....

That is awfully tempting. Any thoughts on how the B1+ compares to your mod B1s?

Those speakers probably won't have any listener fatigue.. Chane is known for being smooth...I'm not sure about the clarity.. That's hard to compare , speaker to speaker without doing an a/ b...

I would think they are close.. The mods were perceptible in better clarity than the original b1s , but the +s fixed some of the issues, so they are probably close.. I can say without hesitation that the b1+s AND a good sub will be a very safe bet for both music and ht at that price point in a small to medium room ...they can play loud ...
In that case: [/QUOTE]
ooh. these are interesting. I hadn't thought about them in a long time. Thanks for putting them on my radar

I think the B1+ are officially in the mix.

Not sure what made them B-stock but I couldn't find any blemishes. Perhaps demo or customer returns?

I have not experinced any listening fatigue whatsoever. Of course they will reveal any flaws in poorer recordings so if the source material is bright/harsh they will not mask it.

If the budget is under $500.. * they should be*.. Enjoy the hunt...Even vs $700 speakers..
