Can I hook up powered sub and speaker sub to the same unit

I have an old Boston speaker sub and just purchased a Yamaha powered sub. Can I hook them both up or will it not sound right or even work?

Hook them up to what?
I think what your trying to say is if the Yammy can power the BA? If the Yammy has binding posts for sub power, then it's yes. But 99.999% of the time it's no. The BA needs it's own amp.
Sorry, I have not communicated this clearly. I know the Yamaha sub can be hooked up to the receiver by the subwoofer cable. That is taken care of. To get more bass can I also use my Boston sub which is only hooked up by speaker wire. You run speaker wire to both the sub and your speaker to use it. Does that make sense? Can I use both or will the Boston sub really not do that much.
I believe you can do it. It might not sound the greatest but it should work. You might have to play with the yammy's settings to get the best sound. Good luck.
The receiver's amplifier channel that is powering the subwoofer would be working harder than any of the others. The one that is powering the sub will distort well before the others . It might cause the receiver to shutdown or fail. I suggest not doing that. Oh, and the sub wouldn't be low-passed. :yuck:

If your receiver has a low-pass filtered sub-out, then get a mono amp and use that to power the sub. Use a Y-connector and split the sub-out.

The results may not be worth the effort, but if ya wanna know, ya gotta try.

edit: I just realized that the Boston sub may be powered and the OP is wondering if it can be fed a speaker-level signal. If it is powered, then go ahead and feed it a speaker-level signal from the receiver. I'd assume it also has the proper filtering.

Just make sure you're not using the receiver's amplifier to power the sub.

You could, but it wouldn't help. Unless there is an amplified subwoofer output on the receiver (doubtful), then you have to use a full-range channel for the BA sub. And if you correctly set your receiver crossover, there won't be any bass on that channel.
